Several series of short biographies have been published in recent years, including the American Presidents series and the Great Generals series, to give busy readers the opportunity to learn about famous individuals in brief compass. In 1999, Penguin Press initiated its "Penguin Lives" series with this short biography of Crazy Horse by the American novelist, Larry McMurtry. It was an intruiging and appropriate choice. Crazy Horse's life is the stuff of legend. Just a glance at titles here at Amazon shows how much has been written about Crazy Horse on the basis of what remains a thin historical record. Crazy Horse continues to fascinate many people as shown, among other ways, in the many reviews of McMurtry's title here at Amazon and of other books about the great Oglalla Sioux warrior.McMurtry uses his gifts as a novelist and his formidable historical knowledge of the American West to give the reader insight into an elusive person. McMurtry's book constitutes an exploration of the literature and legends surrounding Crazy Horse as much as it constitutes a biography of the man. This is unavoidable given the state of the historical record. With McMurtry's attempt to sift through the legends, Crazy Horse still emerges in his account as an extraordinary figure. McMurtry gives a convincing portrayal of an important and difficult man in a book of 140 pages. McMurtry makes as much as he can of a person with a rare way of life whom we do not know. To his own people, Crazy Horse was known as "Our Strange Man".In McMurtry's account, Crazy Horse (1840 -- 1877) emerges as a loner and a mystic. From his youngest days, Crazy Horse went his own way. He was a visionary, in common with many of the Sioux, but frequently sought his vision in ways outside tribal tradition. McMurtry imaginatively captures a great deal of Crazy Horse in this description of the dreams, wanderings, and spiritual quests which were a feature of his adolescence and adult life:"It is easy on the plains to imagine things not seen, worlds not known. Crazy Horse, in his wanderings over the summer plains, would have seen many mirages, which perhaps encouraged him in his belief that this world, with its buffalo and horses, is only the shadow of the real world. He was in a way a prairie Platonist, seeing an ideal of which the day's events were only a shadow." (pp. 49-50)Crazy Horse was a hunter of buffalo and a leader of his people in skirmishes and fights with other Indians. As a young man, he became one of four tribal members honored with the title of "Shirt-Wearer" with the responsibility of looking after the well-being of the people, including the poor. When Crazy Horse ran off briefly with Black Buffalo Woman, the wife of another man, he was almost killed by her jealous husband, No Water, and the Tribe was split apart. The rift was healed by intra-tribal diplomacy, but Crazy Horse lost his title of Shirt-Wearer over the incident.Crazy Horse is best-known for his role in three battles with the onrushing white settlers, Fetterman's Massacre of 1868, the Battle of Rosebud in 1876, and most famously the Battle of Little Bighorn against Custer on June 25, 1876. These battles established Crazy Horse's fame as a great military leader of his people although his role in each of them, especially Little Big Horn, remains uncertain. After Little Big Horn, Crazy Horse and a group of 900 Indians, exhausted by cold and pursuit, were forced to turn themselves in at Fort Robinson, Nebraska. Four months later, under circumstances that remain difficult to determine, Crazy Horse was tricked into returning to the Fort under a promise of a meeting with the commanding general. Instead, Crazy Horse was to have been exiled to a prison in Florida. A victim of military treachery and of jealousies among his own people, Crazy Horse was assassinated on September 5, 1877.Crazy Horse, for McMurtry, was a man who was not an administrator or a negotiator. He did not surrender or try to adjust to the inevitability of a new way of life, as did some of his compatriots. He remained faithful to the life of a warrior on the lonely plains, to the hunt, and to the mystic vision to the end. As in many cases, Crazy Horse became a figure of legend because this is what his life merited. Even when we are cognizant of what we do not know, as McMurtry is, a remarkable and enigmatic figure emerges. From the Indian wars and tragedies of the American west, McMurtry offers an account of a person whose life and goals were inextricably tied to a particular people and whose story yet remains universal and timeless.Robin Friedman

I think this is a good read, and it is realistic in its assertions. It draws heavily on the conclusions of other authors, who may have presented a more energetic biography of Crazy Horse, but it appears to cut through some of the unverified BS and grounds it in reality. You come away in agreement that Crazy Horse was one of the most written about Western figures, except maybe Custer and Wyatt Earp, but it gives a bit of a reality check on some of the other enthusiastic authors. All told, a very good book on an extremely interesting man, who was an unintentional leader, a man who just wanted to go his own way, and help his people int he process. I do not regret reading it, and thank McMurtry for another good read.

It's a tiny book and I learned as much about Crazy Horse with this booklet than I did with the McMurtry Custer book. Good information and insight and McMurtry knows his stuff and tells you where he learned it and who are the foremost authors on the subjects. I went and bought those books so I do not regret this purchase.

I love Larry McMurtry's books , so I was looking forward to reading this, but I found it disjointed and awkward. I had to make myself finish it in preparation for an upcoming trip. McMurtry's gift is character development and inventive plots and not history. it is clear that he stuck to the known facts, which aren't that many, for the sake of accuracy, but it lacked any charm or emotional resonance that I was looking for. If you're having trouble sleeping, this is a perfect book to remedy this!

McMurtry is kind of the 'Local Historian' of early Texas life. But it is good to remember that he is primarily a writer of fiction, and not an Academic Historian. It is extremely difficult to separate the actual history of Crazy Horse from the myths, primarily because his life has been so romanticized into fiction for a 100 years. This is a good read on the life of Crazy Horse, because McMurtry is clear about these problems. He stays with most of the known facts. But I would refer readers to Marie Sandoz as the major writer of biography for Crazy Horse. Both books are companions for a good indication of the Plains life of a major Sioux tactical master of warfare.Who may well have been born as a child of early American Settlers in Texas.

First, I'm a big Larry McMurtry fan and have read most of his books. Perhaps McMurtry has taught me to expect more? The story of Crazy Horse is intriguing, but there is apparently so little documentation to support the story. Consequently there was repetition throughout the book. Because it is McMurtry, I would give it the benefit of the doubt and recommend it to anyone interest in history on the frontier in the late 1890's to early 1900's.

A welcome addition to the little history we have on the formidable Crazy Horse. McMurtry has reviewed some of the major sources and written a profile rather than a biography because he also explains how scanty our knowledge of Crazy Horse is and why that is the case.

I bought this book to learn more about Crazy Horse, an Indian I remember reading about in high school. I've always wanted to learn more about him and about the struggle of Indians. This book satisfied that informational curiousity. This book reads clinically. It takes his life and tries to disspell rumors and exaggerations and find the truth. It's very sad how the life of Crazy Horse ended and you can't help feel for the plight of the Indians. I enjoyed reading this as a cultural study but not for a fun, enjoyable read. If you are looking for a typical novel, then don't buy this book. If you are looking information and want to learn about the plight of Indians, then this is the book for you.

Goodbye, Antoura: A Memoir of the Armenian Genocide

Review

"Though surely dark at times, Panian's journey to salvation and his eventual transition into a leading intellectual and education leader in the Armenian Diaspora is an adventure steeped in hope, courage, and optimism. His description of the horrors he was forced to live, coupled with the hopefulness that his new life promised after Antoura, makes the English translation of Goodbye, Antoura an invaluable addition to the already rich library of genocide memoirs that give the survivors a voice." (Rupen Janbazian Armenian Weekly)"Goodbye, Antoura stands out as a telling, concise, and human portrait of a painful and traumatic component of the Armenian genocide. Beyond academic circles, the memoir could find a special audience among young adults, much as The Diary of Anne Frank has done. Panian's skill at weaving the celestial with the hellish is a true gift to the reader; through Panian's work, one can experience intimately this knot of angst and awe that is often concomitant with being a thoughtful child." (Nora Lessersohn,Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association)"A poignant story of a child's stubborn determination to survive, Goodbye, Antoura is an important book about memory, history, and the Armenian Genocide." (Davide Rodogno author of Against Massacre)"Goodbye, Antoura is far more than a personal memoir. Karnig Panian has captured with literary creativity the spirit of person, family, community, nation and humanity―the essence of identity itself. Within this saga of an Armenian orphaned boy being forcibly stripped of his identity is a story of universal relevance." (Richard G. Hovannisian author of The Republic of Armenia)"A remarkable and unforgettable book. It is an indispensable tool for awakening our consciences and restoring our collective sense of decency and our solidarity with all those who have suffered the horrors of genocide." (Vartan Gregorian)"This searing account of a little boy wrenched from family and innocence manages to retrieve irrepressible flashes of great humanity amid the horror and chaos. It is a literary gem." (David Gardner Financial Times)

This is a short book--about 180 pages. I'm glad it was short---it was terribly painful to read. Not because of poor writing by Panian. The author did an excellent job of telling the story of the Armenian genocide--without dramatics. I think the fact that the book was written as the remembrance of the little boy who experienced it--is why it was so hard to read. I think this segment of the genocide--the orphans who had lost all their families and then were told to forget about them and their culture--is truly an untold story. I plan to read another book about the Armenian genocide--this one was my first--because of the response of my Turkish guides when I was in Turkey a few years ago. We actually went to far eastern Turkey near where the majority of the genocide occurred. The guides did not want to talk about it--in fact they even portrayed it as something that really had happened. 1 1/2 million people were killed. Turkey has done an outstanding job of covering up the genocide they unleashed.

A TRUE STORY OF SURVIVAL.A 5 year old boy survives against all odds during the forced deportations and massacres by the Ottoman Turks of Armenian families from their homeland into the deserts of Syria. After loosing every member of his family in the harsh conditions of the desert and the cruelty of the Turkish soldiers, he finds himself in a camp orphanage in Lebanon where the kids were forced to change their identity. The Antoura orphanage was another project of the Armenian genocide by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk; its administrators sought to transform the children into Turks by changing their Armenian names, forcing them to speak Turkish, and erasing their history. This is an incredible story of determination, survival and how children recognize injustice and fight back in the most imaginative ways. A MUST READ!!!!! A PAGE TURNER!!!

The story of Karnig is the story of my Grandfathers (Ardashes) cousin. Reading it takes me back to when my Grandparents came to visit and my "dede: told me the story's of Gurin, its hot springs, and hour clan was quite sizable once before the Turks decided to slaughter us. It is especially difficult to read his memoirs when it hits so close to home. Thanks to the perseverance of Karnig, my Grandfather Ardashes and all of the Grandparents and great-parents of that generation the Panian clan has added three heirs to its thrown and perhaps one day will grow to be as sizable as it once was before in Gurin.

Why can't the Turks do as the Germans have done? Acknowledge the atrocity so the present can go on living. Modern day Germans are not responsible for the Holocaust. Modern day Turks are not responsible for the Armenian Genocide, but only when they freely acknowledge it. This is a remarkable personal account from one survivor--of what did really happen.

Chapters are divided chronologically. Most of the memoir is focused on Panians life in the orphanage after their exodus from Gurin to the desert deportation camps. Many footnotes are included and were very helpful.Pages 59-65 and pages 157-166 are strictly black and white historical photographs showing the orphanage, orphans, important leaders, and Panians later life after the war.The memoir starts when Panian is 5 years old which makes it difficult to trust every detailed recollection. As stated, the bulk of his story lies within the orphanage and sometimes get wordy and listless. However, his life in the desert deportation camp and his life after the orphanage was somberly intruging.

Sad but fascinating about the Armenian Genocide. I donated it to the public library here and dedicated it to my dear friend's father, also dear, who was affected as a small child and whose life was formed by the decade long Genocide and whose USA citizenship I stood up for long ago.Everyone should know about the Armenian Genocide.Hitler used it somewhat as a prototype for his evil final solution

As an Armenian who knows little about my families history other than that my great grandmother, who lived through the genocide, survived and would not speak openly about here horrific experience at the hands of the Turks, I was greatly moved and thankful for this story told by Mr Panian. The story despite the horror it shares is a wonderful story of survival and determination to remain grounded in faith and family despite attempts to strip that away. I would recommend to anyone who is interested in a heart felt story and the happenings of the Armenian Genocide. I feel like it's an appropriate read for ages 13 and above.

Good book to gain perspective of the Armenian Genocide but I am doubtful of it's status as a true Memoir because the narrator was 5 years old during his time so I kind of doubt his reliability as a narrator. I wonder if it is a compilation of stories that Panian collected from many people to create his memoir but I would call it more "based on a true story" than a memoir.
