Mrs. Caliban, by Rachel Ingalls

Review

“A masterpiece and totally off the wall.” - Electric Literature“It's not just Disney that can ruminate on romance between a beauty and a beast. In this reissue of Rachel Ingalls' 1982 novel, housewife Dorothy hears on the radio that a potentially dangerous monster has just escaped a research facility. But when the creature walks through her door, he awakens something new in her. This is our pick for feminist social satire that's deliciously weird.” - Estelle Tang, Elle“Indeed, as a feminist piece with a deep romantic core, that might best explain Mrs. Caliban’s ability to emerge as an unlikely literary classic. There’s the sheer entertainment factor ― steamy Aquaman sex, anyone?―but then just underneath is a real depth, a quiet brilliance in its study of behavior and circumstance. It cuts through the noise, enlightening while also resonating, soothing in its dreamy surrealism. And isn’t that the perfect recipe for an enduring classic?” - David Canfield, EW“Thirty-five years old, it is fresher than most things written yesterday. I wish I could say that I have always known about it. Instead I confess to the zeal of a new convert. Every one of its 125 pages is perfect, original, and arresting. Clear a Saturday, please, and read it in a single sitting.” - Christine Smallwood, Harper's Magazine“Every volume Rachel Ingalls has written displays the craft of a quite remarkable talent. Tales of love, terror, betrayal and grief, which others would spin out for hundreds of pages, are given the occluded force of poetry.” - Independent“The love story is a delight, the social commentary sharp, the writing funny and fun―and yet the sorrow, even bitterness, at the core of this book about our perfidious species is inescapable and profound.” - Kirkus (starred review)“[A] slim surrealist masterpiece.” - LA Times“By marrying domestic realism with the literature of the bizarre, Ingalls brings tenderness to the monstrous and renders the recognizable utterly weird. Compact yet capacious, the novel wonders at all the ways we can desire and destroy one another. It’s unabashedly campy and deadly serious; it dares the reader to admit that these aims are not at all at odds.” - Literary Hub“A love affair with a 6-foot-7-inch amphibian might not be every woman’s fantasy, but for Dorothy―the lonely housewife at the center of this soon-to-be-reissued 1982 novel―it’s working out just fine. A short, funny, bizarre novel that’s worth your time.” - Los Angeles Magazine“Perhaps Ingalls’s finest accomplishment in the novel is the unflappable gentleness of her tone, which records supernatural surprise and flaming horror simply, almost tranquilly. The result is paradoxically quotidian and dreamlike, like a fable or folktale.” - Rob Latham, Los Angeles Review of Books

There was a great deal of buzz on Twitter about this novel's reissue, articles about its cult-status, NPR mentions, it was the thing all the cool literary kids were talking about, and so, that I'd never heard of nor read it pushed all my "I wanna be popular, too" buttons and I quickly ordered a used copy.Novella rather than novel, this allegorical romantic-tragic-comic --- okay, this un-categorizable romp is a feminist --- no, a humanist --- no, a satirical --- no, a fable of --- no, a lyrical --- no, a political --- you see the problem?Ignored when released in 1982, its naming in 1986 by the British Book Marketing Council as one of the twenty greatest American novels since World War II still failed to earn Mrs. Caliban a permanent place on the list of must read classics but, luckily, it has been sustained by its inclusion in many a literary fiction MFA curriculum.Having lost two children, trapped in a marriage of resigned, passionless suburban-ennui with an adulterous, deceiving husband, Dorothy Caliban, numbed and defeated into surrender by choices made and not, is making salad one day when "... a gigantic six-foot-seven-inch frog-like creature shouldered its way into the house and stood stock-still in front of her, crouching slightly, and staring straight at her face." She's met Larry.Larry has been held captive, experimented on and tortured by government researchers who he's killed in order to escape. Dorothy sympathizes, offers him sanctuary, and soon enough, they fall into one another --- physically, emotionally, spiritually --- as she hides him, unbeknownst to her oblivious husband --- in a room off her kitchen, where Larry learns about Dorothy's world from television and radio programmes. Thus is set into motion a series of events revealing fissures, cracks, and facades in the lives of Dorothy, her husband and friends, and the world in which she lives, a world she tells Larry is "all right" now that he is in it.Is Larry real? A fantasy onto which Mrs. Caliban projects her dissatisfaction with her limited, disappointing life? Is this a modern Beauty and the Beast? Or, is this feminist social-theory writ ironic? It is, I think, all those things and more, a concupiscent conflagration of marvelous writing, imaginative use of plot tropes, humor, pathos, and technique, all of which is entertaining. Imagine an episode of The Twilight Zone as written by Elizabeth McCracken and directed by Baz Luhrman; the implausible and outrageous made believable and beautiful.

In her mid-life, Dorothy’s life is far from the best. She’s experienced the unexpected death of her young son, lost a baby, has only one real, close friend, and has a husband who both ignores and cheats on her. Hers is a sad life. But her life changes considerably the day Larry walks through her backdoor—Larry who the radio news announcer describes as a “creature” escaped from “the Jefferson Institute for Oceanographic Research” after horribly mutilating its keeper and the scientist studying the “Monsterman” after capturing it on a “South American expedition.” Larry—with eyes “seemingly much larger than the eyes of a human being, and extremely deep” standing six-foot-seven-inches tall with a head “quite like the head of a frog, but rounder,” webbed hands and feet, and a body “exactly like a man—a well-built large man—except he was a dark spotted green brown in colour and had no hair anywhere.” Larry—who is taught to speak at the Institute and declares his keepers “had mistreated him” and forced him to “participate in various forms of sexual abuse, some of which [Dorothy] hadn’t known of before.” Larry—who Dorothy hides away in a back room of the house where her husband never goes—and becomes Dorothy’s lover. Larry—who makes Dorothy happy again.Mrs. Caliban (1983; with an Introduction by Rivka Galchen in the New Directions reissue of 2017) by Rachel Ingalls is a most incredible book. The blurb on the cover from The New Yorker refers to it as “A perfect novel.” Never a huge success (none of her work has been due to its eclectic nature and, perhaps because she is a woman states David Canfield in Entertainment Weekly), Ingalls’ Mrs. Caliban is getting new attention most likely due to the tremendous film success of another amphibian-man/human female love story, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water (2017). Ingall’s novella, however, has been praised by authors such as John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Daniel Handler (Entertainment Weekly) since its release. As surreal as Dorothy’s acceptance of the sea-monster Larry appears to be and the sexual affair they have (which is never explicitly detailed), the novella also has in it moments of sudden (off-stage) murder, infidelity, duplicity, and violence. Inhuman weaknesses are countlessly on display. But don’t for a moment believe that Mrs. Caliban is a horror novel. Ingalls tells her story in such an off-hand, even jovial narrative voice that the distressing moments contained within the work seem as every-day as shopping for avocados. Readers will not find themselves horrified or even shocked, but truly enchanted as they step into Dorothy’s world long before Larry appears (and he doesn’t appear until nearly twenty pages into the work). As Larry gets more restless and is filled with questions about humans from watching TV and venturing out among them in disguise, as Dorothy learns more about her best friend’s personal life, as Dorothy’s husband continues his secretiveness, as more victims allegedly fall “to the bloodlust of this creature,” and Dorothy and Larry take their relationship to increasingly new heights, readers turn the pages of Mrs. Caliban in awe, wondering how things are going to turn out, with any “willing suspension of disbelief” left far behind. There is one point of ambiguity in Mrs. Caliban that is never fully addressed. At the beginning of the story Dorothy hears secret, short messages emitting from her very old radio that “looked like a 1930s Gothic cathedral… that couldn’t possibly be real.” Only she can hear them. Are they products of her vivid imagination? And could Larry, after the newscast of the “monsterman’s escape” who is never seen by anyone but Dorothy (although he comes home wounded from an attack by strangers with dire consequences), also be imaginary? Such is the magic of Ingalls’ writing that the reader will never know, and it really doesn’t matter. The climax of the novella is surprisingly intense and the conclusion heart-grabbing. Mrs. Caliban is, indeed, a “perfect novel” without a single, wasted word and readers are bound to be left wondering what other treasures by Rachel Ingalls await re-discovery.

I don't understand the good reviews and certainly not calling this a "perfect" novel. It surely had an interesting and compelling premise, but most of what happens outside of this central idea is mundane, boring and predictable. Perhaps it needs to be to help us accept the fantastical relationship at its core, but I still found it brain-numbing. On the other hand, there is not enough detail given to the development of the pivotal romance for us to believe in it or care very deeply. This is rather an ambiguous, ambivalent review ... but I guess that sums up how I feel about this novella.

I recently saw The Shape of Water and, feeling underwhelmed by the execution of its brilliant premise, figured I'd read this book that presents a very similar story.Larry is a talking sea monster who loves avocados. (Who can blame him, honestly?) After escaping from a duo of sadistic scientists who captured him, he shows up at the door of a lonely housewife named Dorothy and reinvigorates her mundane life. This being a slim novella, there's very little room for setup or explanation. In fact, the casual and matter-of-fact way that the relationship between Larry and Dorothy plays out is part of its charm. She accepts him into her life immediately, allowing him to fill the void left by her unhappy marriage and the recent death of her child. Is Larry real, or is he merely Dorothy's fantasy—the antithesis of her husband and her boring existence? This quirky and charming little novel is also a biting work of social satire and feminist fiction, existing in the gap between reality and fantasy, grief and joy, acquiescence and agency.

F*ck Feelings: One Shrink's Practical Advice for Managing All Life's Impossible Problems, by Sarah Bennett

Review

"Gives the middle finger to the self-help genre....Refreshingly blunt." (Harper's Bazaar)"The Ice Bucket Challenge of self-help books...sound advice." (New York Post)"The Bennetts have no time for gooey motivational slogans....Together they urge readers to abandon a quest for perfection in favor of realistic attempts at betterment....The Bennetts' goal is not that you might finish the book and say, 'I am perfect,' but that you might finish the book and say, 'I am the best version of myself that I can be at the moment.' (The New York Times Book Review)"A tough-love, irreverent take on 'life's impossible problems.'" (The Atlantic)"F*ck Feelings is the ultimate anti-self-help book." (Refinery 29)"A highly informative and entertaining smack down to get your head on straight." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)"Engaging...it's hard to argue with the book's advice." (Elle)"F*ck Feelings offers not only reliable, practical, and eminently useful advice to deal with all of life's various points of pain, but it is also funny, engaging, intelligent, and warm. Full of arresting examples and memorable quips, the book will help anyone who reads it to replace fool's gold with the genuine gem of wisdom." (Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of Driven to Distraction)“I don’t trust anything called a “self-help” book which is why I love F*ck Feelings. There’s no smiling guru on the cover. We would all be smiling, motivated, people all day long if our f*cking feelings didn’t keep f*cking us up – but this book helps. It gives clear examples of our own circular thinking and how to accept our feelings but not always cater to them, and it’s FUNNY. Because life – even when it sucks – is FUNNY.” (Jen Kirkman, stand-up comedian and New York Times bestselling author of I Can Barely Take Care of Myself)“Despite the in-your-face title, Dr. Michael Bennett really does believe in feelings. He just thinks that there is only so much time that one should spend examining one’s belly button searching for answers or getting hung up on guilt or anger. Instead, people should recognize and accept their flaws and get on with modifying or changing their behaviors and attitudes. This is useful advice for everyone, including therapists who can use this technique as a way of helping patients avoid getting stuck in endless therapy. I found myself using it on several of my patients. A great combination – valuable education and a fun read.” (Gail Erlick Robinson MD, DPsych, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Toronto)

I must admit I'm a bit conflicted about this one. I found the topics and advice fairly solid but repetitive. Daughter's contribution was to be humor but I found that aspect fairly thin. While the extensive use of profanity is evidently supposed to be clever and reflective of the vernacular, I found it somewhat superfluous. Not that I am whining about it, profanity certainly has its place but in many current novels and in this work it tends to be overdone to the point where it loses the ability to deliver the emphasis that is usually its role. The format is to isolate an issue, tell you what you cannot reasonably expect to happen (despite your fondest wishes), what you can expect, how to get there and what script to follow after including examples some discussion. Shake up the content and repeat about 10 times and it get a bit wearying. It is a fairly reasonable approach to the idea that life isn't fair and here are some ways to deal with it.

As a psychotherapist with 30 years experience I liked the basic approach- sometimes it's time to stop overthinking and just accept and move on. But this isn't the right approach every time or for everyone and he doesn't recognize that. Some of his examples of "you can't expect to get this" are things my clients have been able to get. Some of his other "factual real-life" promulgations are likewise wrong. His agenda of being controversial leads him to too much black and white thinking and that skews his view of what the reality actually is. The book is good for challenging some assumptions about what therapy should look like and what it can do, but be careful in applying it that you don't become TOO accepting and forego changes that act an be made.

This book has plenty of swears -- whether that's a draw or a hindrance for you, they are in there and they are plentiful. But more importantly, this book has some of the best advice that no one gives you. Spending years getting to the source of why you don't get along with your parents or your siblings or why it's hard for you to commit or why you have self-destructive impulses is ultimately pointless to your wellbeing. Dr. Bennett recognizes these as diversions from doing the work that makes you proud of the life you have. The book doesn't promise to give you the life you want or the life you deserve, because so much of that is beyond your control. If you're born into difficult circumstances or don't have support or resources, it's going to be very hard to get the kind of life "you've always dreamed of" -- this book gives you real tools and the right mindset to achieve your goals and be proud of making the best life you can. in other words, teaches you to concentrate on getting ish done and what to do when unexpected ish hits the fan (clearly, I don't mind the swears, and I wish amazon didn't mind either). I've bought five copies for everyone in my immediate family, I'm going to probably give one to everyone on my Christmas list. Including my 90-year-old grandmother.

For too much of my life I was stuck in the "but things should be different" rut. This book, using many many examples, was a big help in getting me out of the rut and into life. It asks the question, "What is reasonable to expect?" instead of "What is the ideal solution in a perfect world?" I got the help I needed, both mental and medical, and am generally happier than I have been in decades (really truly literally).Let me just be clear: this book was an impetus, not a solution, but it did reveal the perspective I needed in my life.

This book isn't super encouraging, but it's very realistic and matter-of-fact. If you aren't into the whole woo-woo "the universe/god is working in your favor if you let it" approach to self-help, you will probably like this one as it is very scientifically based and no-nonsense. However if you are looking for a pick-me-up that makes you feel better about your situation immediately, this one might not be the best.

Praise:This book contains a treasure of wisdom, centered on accepting life's imperfections and limitations, working with them, instead of against them. This attitude is similar to the ideas of the stoic philosophers. It is also similar to the scientific method, which never asks how things ought to be, only how they are. There are many valuable passages; I'll share one:"If your career happens to lack prestige or follows an unconventional, restless path, don’t criticize yourself. Respect yourself all the more for having found a way to meet standards using equipment you didn’t choose and given habits that are hard to break."This is a refreshing antidote to the obnoxious, "follow your passion and become a new person" poison.Criticism:The book is at least one third longer than it needs to be, to communicate its content. Part of the excess includes unhelpful attempts at humor, timely pop culture references, and cursing. I admit the authors put "f*ck" right there in the title to grab attention but still, they wore me out with their "cleverness."These elements serve to "date" the book, so that its tone will sound hokey in a couple of years. (Indeed, it sounds that way to me already.) I'll be sad when that happens. This book deserves to become a classic. My American culture tragically overvalues entertainment in all forms, and humor especially. A laugh that is occasional, natural, based on real world observation, is always welcome. Compulsive humor, forced fun is rather sickening.

Wow! Straight talk life advice that pulls no punches in the most amusing way possible. I laughed so hard at this book, even while reading the parts for my particular difficulties. It's a rare book that can tell make you laugh while calling you out on your part of the BS. I love it. I'm going to keep it forever. Any issues that you're having in life can be handled through this book. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything like it. I call this my portable psychiatrist. If you want to skip the talking, and get straight to the solution- buy this now.

This was a big disappointment. It is a book full of math assignments. I was looking for a book to help us with math assignments, not give us more! There are no lessons, no samples, no examples. Just assignments. So a 40 something mom that can't remember 5th grade math and certainly doesn't get common core is of no help to her kid. I guess this would be good if your kid totally understand the math and you just wanted to give them more busy work because the answers are in the back so at least you could check the assignment. But if you don't know how to tell your kid WHY a problem is wrong, don't buy this book!

Despite my strong opinions (not positive) about the Common Core curriculum, this book has helped my 3rd grader. I've hired a tutor for him and then we work on this workbook each night, in addition to his homework. It's a ridiculous amount of work to put on 8-9 year old kids, but I digress. As for the workbook, each day (for 4 days), there are 4 math problems to solve. On the 5th day, there is an assessment consisting of 10 questions. The problems are challenging, but not impossible. If you're looking for something to supplement your 3rd grader's homework, this is a good option.

I was interested in understanding the mysteries and horror stories I have heard about the Common Core Math concepts. As a retired, conservative, elementary school teacher I found this workbook to be easily understood. Many of the math concepts in this workbook are presented in word problems, estimates, graphs, and illustrated format which is different from the straight forward rote mathematics commonly taught in the past. The math problems presented in this workbook use many of the techniques commonly used to help children better understand the concepts of numbers and not just rote memory. I found that this workbook would be beneficial for children who are home schooled.

It's a practice book. Might be good for review of grade 3. Each day has problems from mixed categories - calculation/graph/measure/geometry/work problems. The workbook starts at easier level and has more difficult problems for later weeks. It is good that kids would continuously practice various math problems everyday. I did not like it much because it is difficult to teach any category consistently and make my son to practice once category until he completely understands.

I love that there are only four practice problems a day and I get to tailor my instruction based upon my students learning styles. This book has practice problems that address the common core standards for that grade level, it acts as a pacing guide for your instruction if you don't have a math basal. The practice problems and standards spiral for several weeks as they add a new standard one or two are dropped. You can add to it my doing math talks and math investigations along with games. It's not a math series or basal, however, it is a great teaching guide.

I recommend this series to all my students. The English Language Arts books are great too.I have used several workbooks for my students over the years. These have been one fo the best student workbooks. My children enjoyed working on these. My kids worked on these books from Grade 4 - PreAlgebra. The activities are challenging for advanced students- if a child is in Grade 3 and needs challenging Math problems, I get the Grade 4 book in this series. They should know all the concepts before starting because it has problems from all topics starting from week 1. It can be used as extra resource for students in an advanced program, or over Summer to bridge the gap. This is a workbook and not a textbook.

I purchased this for my daughter who is moving to second grade as practice during the summer so that she can practice math. She does 3-5 pages at a time and in my opinion has helped to strengthen her math skills and her confidence.

I bought this book for my Son for summer school and he loves it. It's easy and self taught. My son spends lots of time and seems to enjoy learning this way.... Homeschool may be better for my son .... My son has even talked with me about it. ADHD plays a major role in helping to determine if this type of education is a better learning activity then school. This will offer my son the ability to get away from the bulling because he's so hyper and difficult at times because he's board.

The story was good...my daughter enjoyed the read. Unfortunately, the book arrived in only fair condition, but the seller had listed it as 'very good'. It quite literally fell apart upon handling. A section that fell out had to be taped back in and a thick section of pages in the middle of the book sticks out beyond the others and doesn't align when the book is closed. The pages are very yellowed. It looks like a relic from the 70's, which is fine if that's what the buyer wants, but it should have been described as such.

I first read THE ISLAND STALLION RACES when I was in grade school. I'd always much preferred the BLACK STALLION books to the ones about Flame, but this book was an exception. Farley went off into a whole new realm - science fiction. By introducing two visitors from outer space, Jay and Flick, he brought a wonderful magic and excitement to Steve and Flame's story that Azul Island had never been able to do for me. The visitors are delightful - fussy, rule-bound Flick (with his odd unexplained secret about some side trip he made on a previous voyage that he doesn't want revealed) and young-spirited, wildly enthusiastic Jay, with his passion for race horses. Their constant bickering, and gradual revelation of their planet's astonishing history and technology kept me fascinated. And there is an overall theme of a benevolent, enchanting universe full of discovery and adventure that left me feeling joyful and "open to all things unknown and new." (Side note - The mysterious visitor at the beginning of THE BLACK STALLION MYSTERY - Is that Jay?)

I read every book in the Black Stallion series up through The Horse-Tamer, and The Island Stallion is my favorite. It must be everybody else's favorite, too, because it has received all 5-star reviews. I must have read this book ten times, at least. I loved the idea of the Caribbean Island long ago abandoned by the Spaniards, of the red horse high on the cliff, and of Steve Duncan making his way through the stone maze: tense, scary, and exciting. Walter Farley knew how to write great horse stories and great adventure stories. The first two books in the Black Stallion series testify to that. But The Island Stallion tops them all in suspense.

This book was written as part of the Black Stallion series, but it is it's own story about a different boy and a great red stallion.

Love, love, love this book! Walter Farley truly knows how to write a story that is intriguing and captivating! Captures the very heart of the horse lover!!

This book was AMAZING! it is so full of adventure and mystery. As you read this book you will be filled with a mysterious excitement, and you will be on the edge of your seat, guaranteed! Flame is every kid/teen's dream horse, and Azul Island the place of enchantment! I hope ya'll enjoy it as much as I did! This book is a MUST READ!!!

If you love The Black Stallion books by Walter Farley, you should take a look at his "Island Stallion" books. This title "The Island Stallion Races", is about Steve Duncan, with the aid of two humanoid aliens, racing Flame! Flame is a herd stallion, as wild as the come! Will Steve be able to control him on a track with other stallions? Can Flame prove his speed to the world? Also, who are these aliens? This book was an exciting and adventrous read for kids and adults alike! Hard to find, but worth it!

This is a fun read for anyone who wants to have a fabulous adventure.
