This book may be written for readers 10+. But it is much more. By telling the story of how Smithsonian Institution's cherished merry-go-round ended up in Washington,i Amy Nathan explains how segregation worked and documents a pivotal event in Baltimore's history, the 1963 desegregation of Gwynn Oak Amusement Park after a decade-long campaign. (That incidentally, happened on the very day when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous speech on the Mall). Amy Nathan writes with a historian's skill and eye for documentation. Hers may be a book marketed for young adults but without question it is the most important book published about Maryland history this year because it fills so many gaps. Enhanced by many striking photographs, Amy Nathan offers a long-overdue overview of the 1950s/1960s civil rights activism in Baltimore. Barbara Mills documented some of that in her 2007 book, "Got My Mind Set on Freedom: Maryland's Story of Black & White Activism 1663-2000," but Nathan does it in a more systematic and comprehensive fashion. She describes the key role of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) and the Civic Interest Group, largely consisting of Morgan students..Those two groups--along with the Fellowship House -- were the cutting edge of activism, not NAACP or Urban League.

I chose my high rating because, having lived in Baltimore, MD and been involved in a number of ways in the 50's and 60"s Civil Rights Movement, this book ties together both the national and local stories. The listing of names of "heroes" for freedom, who were school children, college students, homemakers, doctors, ministers, and young married couples brought this 50 year old story alive on every page.Amy Nathan has chosen the merry-go-round; in fact a specific merry go round at the old "trolley" amusement park, as a symbol of freedom. And then, when she tell us it now has the honored place on the national mall in front of the Smithsonian, I was stunned. My own children rode that carousel on the national mall when they were little, with no knowledge that it was on the same day that Dr. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have A Dream Speech" (and I was there as a young seminarian), that the first black child rode the carousel, and the ugly gates of segregation came down!Anyone interested in an in depth look at just one major moment in history needs to read this book. I'll never look at any merry-go-round in the same way.

This book presents detailed information about the Civil Rights movement in Baltimore. This was fascinating to me as a former resident of the city, as the involvement of particular people, neighborhoods, and institutions is described in detail. I'm grateful for the meticulous, careful, clear compilation of information that might otherwise be lost.

I have EVERY World Almanac and Book of Facts since 1961. From time to time I refer to one of the older ones.There isn't much I can say about this book other than the fact that, at least to me, it is an indispensable reference, one which I would not want to be without.Yes you can find a lot of information on line but the tables and information contained in this book, along with the speed with which you can find whatever information you wish, make this book far better and easier to use than looking up the same information on the web.At least, that is my opinion.I always pre-order the book from Amazon soon after it is listed here. Invariably, during the pre-order period, the price goes down (perhaps even just for one day) but Amazon's pre-order guarantee ensures that I will always pay the lowest price offered.Even in a day in which reference books appear to be growing obsolete, I HIGHLY recommend this book to all persons.I thank you for reading this and for considering my opinions.Lawrence H. Lots of information but the print is so itty bitty that even with my good eyes I have to use a magnifying glass to read it.

My roommate devours these fact-filled type books and had been asking for the newest World Almanac. Just received it today and he was stoked. He immediately started to read it. Not sure if I will ever see it again. For those that enjoy the World Almanac series, the newest 2019 is now out and available.

Always well researched, but the print is ridiculously small! The CIA Fact Book is a comparable book.Countries' GDP should always include PPP numbers, the real number.

Hard to figure how they update and add info every year and the book is still about the same size. My friend who loves to read facts-as-relaxation enjoys the occasional NEW Almanac I get him for Christmas.

This book has a lot of information on many subjects. I don’t watch a lot of news these days so I’m catching up on a lot of facts. The print could be a bit bigger, but I’m 71 and wear glasses and I don’t have trouble reading it. Maybe my experience reading my stash of old paperbacks has honed my ability to read small print.

My husband has had one of these every year dating back to the 1960s. This is more than a collection of data- it's information laid out in a way that will keep you flipping through for more. Every time I pick this up I find something new. Keep this one beside your chair and you'll be surprised how often you dip in.

My 13-year-old son has every version of this going back to 2015, and then asked me to buy the latest one so it must be good.
