Students of graphic design, fans of Americana, and anyone appreciative of cultural history will find this tome invaluable.An outstanding reference covering the period from the mid-1850s thru the early 1980s - a full century of changing tastes, technical advancements, and even social maturation; revealing our love of and history with dining out.The coverage is surprisingly deep, with menus representing the most elite haute cuisine to what we now call the 'Three Ds' - diners, drive-ins and dives; providing a fascinating look into the past, glimpsing concepts and ideas about the meals and beverages that were offered from culinary trained chefs to roadhouse slingers.As usual, some of the most compelling aspects for me personally was discovering food options that are no longer mainstream. A couple of examples: Having to look up the term "Shirred Eggs", which made regular appearances during the early part of the twentieth-century. And "Tongue Sandwich", a common working person's lunch and breakfast item of the period which is, in my opinion, self explanatory as to its current exclusion from menus today.My only criticism would be that, while I absolutely loved the massive full-color images, there was something to be said about the lack of editorial content. Simply: There just wasn't enough of it. Primarily due to the fact that space for the written word was gobbled up by the application of three different languages for each comment, wiping out the potential for additional insight. Unfortunate, as I would've loved more background - both factual and anecdotal - for many of the menus on display.The sad thin of layer of insightful text was the only serious flaw to what is easily one of, if not, the best collections I've ever encountered on this subject.A very strong four stars.Notes:- While this is representative of Taschen's typical excellence, whose printed volumes showcase high quality and exceptional content for any number of specialty markets, I suspect had Chronicle Publishing handled the book design aspect, I would've given this an across the board five pointer rating.- This is a physically large and very heavy book. One I would estimate weighs between 4-5lbs. It's not something one can easily manage for some light nighttime reading prior to sleep.Recommendation:- Check out "May I Take Your Order: American Menu Design 1920-1960" from the aforementioned Chronicle Publishing to get a sense of where this production could have seen some improvement.

This big coffee table book is interesting, entertaining, and informative. It's amazing what menus can reveal about a society. The one big surprise here is how many menus were decorated with nude figures--particularly women. I don't normally associate nudity and cuisine! A fun and visually arresting book. I recommend.

This is a marvelous book, as we might expect given that it's Americana from Jim Heimann, who was responsible for the wonderful "All American Ads" series. Paging through this volume is like taking a trip through time, and it's a very different way of experiencing history. We learn what was served in restaurants and at banquets, how much meals cost, and we also get a sense of style which is portrayed in the striking and often unique graphics of each menu. From class to crass, it's a fabulous collection. The paper stock is sturdy, the printing is first class, and I can't recommend it more highly. If you have even the slightest interest in this, buy it. You'll be glad you did. And it's a great gift book for just about anyone -- after all, who doesn't like to go out to eat?

This book had been on my list since it came out, but I only recently found it used. It's just gorgeous! The menus in it are printed perfectly and it's a heavy, hardback book. Taschen has a reputation for excellent quality and this book definitely lives up to that promise.

everything you ever wanted to know about menus, and more. enormous, hardbound book with high quality images, thick paper, and about 2" thick -- i.e. superb value for the price I paid (scored it for $33 when Amazon was running a promotion for 25% off on any book.) Taschen does not disappoint with this one - definitely worth getting if you're into Americana, vintage / retro stuff, or graphic design.

I bought this for my niece. She collects cookbooks, books on culinary history and any other food-related books. Nobody puts out finer books than Taschen. The information is extensive and very entertaining. The pictures are fabulous. If you enjoy the Tashcen series of the decades, you will love this.

Bought this as a gift for our daughter-in-law, but had to peek at it before I gave it to her. It was most interesting. Something that would be useful for both professionals or anyone who just has a love for food culture. Beautiful illustrations.

Some history of the Streit's family,with photos and ads from years gone by are an additional bonus, and the cover of the book feels like a piece of Matzo, it will make you smile!I would recommend this book to anyone looking for some wonderful and new dishes that can be prepared for family or guests.This book will sit proudly among my other cookbooks.

Michael Mirdadâ€™s new book, The Dark Night of the Soul, is really amazing in how it captures exactly what it feels like to go through that process. In my own life, I went through it intensely for a few years, and there were many times when I just wanted to die. But I just kept trusting, even when I had no idea where I was being led, and eventually, I came out stronger, and in many ways, a whole new person. In fact, it shaped me to have the life I have now. At the time, I had to do my own research to figure out what I was going through. It would have been SO GREAT to have this book to help me through many of the challenges that I faced at the time, including relationship endings, job changes, residence changes, changes of friends, and going back to school. It was intense! From this succinct book, I learned the power and value of forgiveness of others as well as myself. I wish I had known that sooner. I also realized that the battles I thought were outside of me were merely reflections of battles within myself, and as I worked to resolve them years later, the outside circumstances stopped being of concern. Finally, it was very comforting to realize that even while IN the Dark Night of the Soul, I was connecting with the divine, because it was all I had. I learned HOW to connect to stay sane. I loved reading about the value of having that connectedness with God in order to truly rebuild a new life, which I most definitely have over the years. I am grateful and appreciative that such a tool given to us by Michael Mirdad is now available for others, so they can get through these times more easily, rather than doing it the hard way as some of us did. Peace and blessings to all who read this book.

This is a perfect book to read when you feel like youâ€™re at your wits end and life is NOT going at all the way you want. I really love the way this author and spiritual teacher presents his eye-opening material with straightforward, no nonsense advice on getting to the heart of your distress, and through it!This easy read is not over fluffed, which I especially appreciated since I was already overwhelmed with the anxiety of feeling stuck, helpless and almost hopeless against the hits I was taking from every area of my life. This book helped me qualify the differences between a mild depression or slump and a full-blown wake up call on a deep level. Everything was going wrong and I learned this major break down is actually labeled "The Dark Night of the Soul". It was fascinating to read how a crashing life or even an un-happy life is all stemming from built up pain to know God. It was tremendously helpful to learn that I am not alone, as everyone supposedly goes through this at least once in a lifetime, lasting from a few weeks or months to a few years!Practical, easy to apply specifics are given on how to navigate and even perceive, as painlessly as possible, whatâ€™s happening during our darkest hours. The good news is, the author takes you all the way through to the other side, to the light at the end of the tunnel! Tips on how to maintain a better way of living were key factors for me, including simple lifestyle changes to implement consistent spiritual practices.My very favorite part of the book describes a technique called â€œstirring the ethersâ€ to help instigate some movement OUT of the uncomfortable phases. You definitely want this book if you, or someone you love is suffering through overwhelming life challenges or a dark night of the soul.

I enjoyed this book very much. Marta has a ability in her writing to develop characters till you feel you know them. You are drawn into the story and into their lives, and soon you are pulling for them, when they are going through tough circumstances. You find yourself wanting to support them, and see what happens next. The suspense builds well, and it really keeps you reading, unable to put the book down until you see what happens next.|This is book 2 in the series and the main characters are Sarah and Aaron. They were once friends as children and now they are grown. Sarah always cared deeply for Aaron but he married another young woman and they had 2 children together. She passed away later on, and now in this story you see the relationship develop between Aaron and Sarah as Sarah is to some degree stalked by a mystery person who is trying to hurt her or even kill her because of some nefarious reason. Aaron becomes more protective of her and as he does he realizes what a wonderful woman she has become and how sweet and loving she is to his daughters and his heart begins to open up to her.Sarah has accepted her lot in life as a unmarried woman but she does still look at Aaron with eyes of love and shyness whenever he is around. As the story unfolds she is working in a quilt shop and restores old quilts and makes new ones, her lot in life seems to be a daily routine that is well established. Then trouble comes in their lives in the entrance of a mystery, barns burning down, and Sarah discovers the first one. Someone is plotting to get the land sold through burning down buildings and there is a mystery company bidding for them, and no one knows how they want to develop the land. Sarah, because she was first to discover the first fire, comes under the scrutiny of the person who set the fires and he is now trying to hurt her or kill her.Truly this book is a wonderful read, and you just feel as if you know each person, and honestly it seems like it would be a lovely place to live.I have read several of Marta Perry's books, and I have never been disappointed. They are always the kind of book that keeps you reading long into the night, until your eyes no longer want to stay open. The characters endearing and well developed, the plot line one with twists and unexpected turns. The book a worthy read. I hope you will try this and see what a great story teller Marta is.

The author gives a few clues along the way, but not enough to get to the real mystery too soon. The characters are interesting and complex enough to grow with them as the story unfolds. This makes for a riveting tale. I've enjoyed all the books I have read by this author. I love how she takes the same setting and characters, but shows them from different perspectives in each book of the trilogy. In this case it was delightful to get to see more depth in characters introduced in the first book (Where Secrets Sleep) and to see the growth in the main characters from the first book. And now I plan to start the third book ... Meanwhile I definitely recommend this trilogy.

I've loved this series. The blend of mystery and romance is so entertaining, and I love all of the characters. That they continue from one story to another multiplies the enjoyment. Even so, each story is perfect as a stand alone as well. Thank you, Ms. Perry for a great afternoon.

This engaging romantic suspense will keep you turning pages until the end. I enjoy the characters, strong female roles without all the unnecessary long drawn out sex scenes. I enjoy reading about the Amish and good Christian values without being preachy.

I just finished reading this second book and it was great. We learned more about the characters as well as having some new characters introduced. I am looking forward to the third book in this series coming out in just a few days. Already have it preorded on Amazon.

Amish and English can work together for a common causes, like volunteer jobs that benefit both communities. It was well written . You are in the Position of authority but walking a very fine between Amish belief and what may be needed. I love learning about quilts. Will start looking for the Baltimore album quilt. I picture I am Julia`s age and all of the traps she walked into are out there. Liked it very much.

Marta Perry never disappoints! I have read this series, one after the other, and in the end I was wishing for more! A VERY gifted writer of Amish romance, & suspense, with manytwists along the way!

Why oh why can't someone publish a book about this church, the grandest on earth, with pictures of the entire church, with each side altar, from the altar where the Pieta is, and then, counterclockwise around the entire interior, then the Nave, with the information provided here. There isn't a single color picture, except the cover. Or any picture for that matter. I mean at least 2 to 3 pages for each area, with a plate, suitable for framing of each area, statue, tomb and object of interest. The information is great, but a very disappointing book, if a souvenir to remind you about the church is what you want.

Very helpful and inexpensive. There is so much to see and be aware of in the Vatican that this guide was of great use. Please read it before you go into the Vatican. FYI, go with a Vatican tour or an individual guide recommended by a friend with experience. The people selling you tours on the street only want you money and the tour is horrible.Groups can be thirty to forty people and you cannot understand what the guide is saying. Some do not take you to the Rafael rooms which are the most amazing art in the Vatican museum.

This book was a god-send. It not only gave you the layout, but also the history behind what you see. I got this because I am hearing impaired and wanted to understand about all the features of the Vatican - art work, statues, frescos, etc. As it turns out its even better than a tour guide as not only can you read ahead of your visit, but while you are going through the Vatican you can use it as a walking guide.

Great guide! I ended up buying the book and took it with me while inside St. Peter's and reading what each statue was and what it stood for. I ended up having people follow me through the Basicilla listening to me read!

I used the book as a "tour guide" and it was perfect! It guides you very fluently and easily through the Vatican museums and st Peters basilica. I wish every place I visited had a guide like this. The recommended ice cream was a fine recommendation!

This book is inadequate. The text is written for elementary school level . There is no mention of the Pinacoteca which contains one of the great collections of religious Renaissance paintings in the world! All the photos are black and white and the book has the appearance of a self-published cheap paperback. Don't waste your money on this one.

Was great to have prior to the visit to be more familiar with the setting and things to look for.

An easy read written very simply for almost all to understand. It includes a good mix of historical fact with a logical tour.

The title is deceptive in that it is nowhere near informing anyone of the price of watches for the year of 2017 as stated. It is a book that is very informative as to the history or watches, especially railroad watches and their history and certain watch companies, some that are out of business now but as a source for pricing information. As far as pricing information of today's watches it fails miserably. There are common and popular watches that are NOT EVEN MENTIONED in this large volume. An example is the newer watches of both Rolex and Omega are not there or even mentioned! I think the Bond Seamasters and Planet Oceans and Rolex Submariners should be there! I am keeping it for the historical information and guidance but that is NOT why I purchased the book. The watches I was interested in were not even there. Also, there is no mention of any Asian companies such as Seiko, Citizen or the like. Very disappointed. But is you want to know about railroad watches at the turn of the 1900's then this is your book.

As someone who frequently comes across old interesting watches on my travels to flea markets and antique shops, I was hoping for something more like a NADA car price guide, but for watches. This isn't that. The first half is devoted to pocket watches, with much history, and the rest is mostly a general overview of prices matched with small pictures of watches, but the information isn't very detailed or complete, I guess that the number of various watches is too vast for that. There are also a number of typos. Altogether though, this can be a valuable resource of info for an aspiring watch collector, but don't expect to get all your questions answered here.

Overall informative with some great watch history in it. Beware, half of the book is dedicated to pocket watches. Many brands missing in the wrist watch section (i.e. Hublot and others) Title is a bit misleading, definitely not a complete price guide. To be fair, that would be hard to do given how many watches are out there.Pictures are pretty terrible. Is it worth buying? Yes and no. I'll keep it as I like all the historic information in it.

A truly insane amount of information in this book! Very much worth the money. Have used it a few times, and it looks great on the shelf when I'm not. Very happy with this book.

Good resource for anyone who still possesses pocket watches from the 20th century It has historical information and movement numbers from the big watch makers of the time. It is sad that the mechanism and the art that was the pocket watch has lost its value in modern times.

It is now easier to evaluate watches for sale, and there is a lot of information about how they work and also their history. I think the book is well worth the price. My only complaint would be that the pictures of pocket watch movements are often of poor quality, as if they've been copied repeatedly.

It is a reference book with an incredible amount of information on watches. Whether you are new to the hobby or an advanced collector, the book is extremely useful in identifying individual watches. You can quickly determine what manufacturer made the watch, when it was made, relative scarcity and general value based on condition. As a price guide, one must keep in mind that it is a guide and the actual marketplace determines prices.

We were required to purchase this book for our ARNP program. The Fourth Edition was just being launched as our new class was starting and we were told that we could use either book but they were going to teach from the newest edition that was updated to today's ARNP standards. I find this book easy to read and like the format. It gets 3 stars because the authors/publisher offers an on-line free enhanced e-book as an adjunct to the book. The problem is, they launched the new book without having the online program available and they "hope to have it up and running soon". They supposedly have instructor resources available but say they can't give us access to that. They should have posted that so half of my class that chose the "updated" version for our Masters course would have gotten our money's worth. I'm sure they will have it available at some point within the next year or so, but that is not helping those of us who forked over a lot more money to get the new book with the online program. This is false advertising and they should reimburse those of us who paid full price for something we didn't get. Apologies and telling us you hope to have it available soon does nothing for those of us who bought the updated version for the extra support. Do yourself a favor, check with the publisher before you buy the new version, if you are interested in having the online adjunct material. Otherwise it is not worth the extra money. Though the inside front cover states, "Questions, concerns? We are happy to help"... that was not so in this case.. We just got, "we hope to have it up sometime in the near future". Shame on you for false advertisement!!! Be up front with advertising and let potential buyers know that what is offered on your cover is not yet available. When you are a student, every dollar counts! Amazon should know as well, as they are not aware that this book is offering something it can not yet deliver.

Decent book; however, resources are lacking and tech support for the publisher is a waste of time. I bought this book brand new and I am not able to access any of the online resources that this book provides. The scratch off code was worthless. It's not a heavy book, but when I go to campus I prefer to access the content online. They need to fix this ASAP or at least lower the cost of the book since the online resources are not available.Update: I have contacted customer service regarding my issue of not having access to the online resource the book offers. Downgraded to 1 star. However, the information provided in the book is good and worthwhile to help you understand the pharmacology aspect.Update 2: This book contains a lot of typos. In addition, there is plagiarism in some chapters that is word for word taken from another book. WTH!!

At this point, it costs me slightly less than getting the hardcopy book, and is starting to seem like more of a hassle. Unlike Kindle textbooks that give one the exact copy of the print book (and those, I give FIVE stars), and because this is a textbook filled with facts and data in TABLES, FIGURES and CHARTS, this book is missing parts (even though I paid $77.36 for my copy). There are three big problems:1. One cannot zoom into a table to read it on a pc. I've been shown one can zoom tables on iPad. So, one can read large tables/figures on iPads, but NOT pcs. See attached png.2. Whether PC or iPad, one cannot highlight words in tables, like an important side effect of a drug, only the ENTIRE table.3. As far as "search" is concerned, the tables do not exist.4. Page numbers don't exist (there's no reason Kindle couldn't place the page number in between the words to the corresponding print version's pages, therefore, one has no way to cite a page number for APA reports.These are things that need to be fixed by Kindle, even if one doesn't get the "print" look. It's very frustrating.

This book is absolutely terrible. I cannot actually believe it was published. There are so many errors and grammar mistakes that I found myself constantly double-checking all of the information I was reading with UptoDate, Epocrates, or my old Lehne's Pharmacology for Nursing Care book. If this book was not assigned to me via my professor I would never willingly purchase or rent this book. I would say you could use this book for fire-starting material but I'd be concerned about the environment with burning such trash. Whoever editing this book should be fired. There are still notes to the editor that were never removed; glaring mistakes like repeated information in the same sentence (pg 880 states that ethanol use should be taken into consideration when determining a patient's bleeding risk and then states it again 4 lines later); contradictory information (just look at the table on page 874 that describes common warfarin drug interactions - notice that nelfinavir and phenytoin show up as both increasing AND decreasing INR levels). For a student trying to LEARN this information, this is not something you want to read. THE ONLY REASON TO BUY THIS WOULD BE TO TAKE A RED PEN TO IT AND SEND IT BACK TO THE PUBLISHER because obviously there was no editor.

I should have read the reviews before I bought this book. The book itself is fine. Not really worth the money since most of this information is available from other free sources, but that's not what's important.This is: There is no mobile access for this book! Do not buy this book if you need digital or mobile access to an ebook! I've gone back and forth with their tech and customer support and they're worthless.

This book is awful and the published should be ashamed of their work. This book is full of grammatical errors, contraindications, repetitive sentences, and lack serious information. This book fails to point out simple but important facts, e.g. it doesn't mention anything about ototoxicity with loop diuretic use. This book also states that there are 29.1 people in the United States who have diabetes (notice the typo?) and that women can be pregnant for as long as 46 weeks.

About the Author
