I never thought I'd say this about an author, but Kristin captures the "voice" of a dog's inner thoughts perfectly! With a A Dog Like Daisy, I actually feel like I understand my own dog much more after reading this book. Added to that is a touching relationship between a rescue dog and her owner and this is a story that will make a lasting impression on you, no matter how old you are!
Daisy speaks to us in her own language. This is a compelling story, seen through the eyes of a service dog. It also acknowledges the very real issue of PTSD among our military veterans. If you want a book that provides the opportunity for some meaningful discussions, this one is perfect!
Colonel Victor has returned from war a stranger to his family. In the hope that he will begin to work his way through PTSD he rescues Daisy, a dog who was unknowingly abandoned by a dogfight club.With a trainer from the VA they spend 10 weeks putting Daisy through her paces with the hopes that she will lead him back into society and back to his family.Although the topics covered in this book are heavy, Kristin ODonnell Tubb includes Daisy’s occasional wry and sarcastic thoughts, lightening the mood.Highly recommended!
I recently adopted a very sweet dog from a local non-kill shelter where I volunteer and was recommended this book to read a short while later. I loved every second of it. It was eye opening to hear the narrator as a dog and it makes me think more about my family’s behavior around her. I’ll definitely recommend this book to other dog lovers and those that volunteer with me.
A Dog Like Daisy offers us a perspective that so often exists, but we don't often credit. Ms. Daisy uses colorful sensory language and imagery to serve as a brilliant, and quite omniscient, narrator. She also helps us to better understand the life of service dogs, our former service members, and their families. Children will be drawn to Ms. Daisy' s voice and wit, while teachers will celebrate the many ways they could use the text as a model for how to paint a picture in the reader's mind. Thank you, Mrs. Tubb for inviting us into Diasy's colorful, cultural, lovable, useful world.
What a beautiful and uplifting story about a sweet, misunderstood rescue dog who desperately wants to be the service companion to a wounded veteran. Charming and surprising from start to finish, with an unexpected ending that left me reaching for the tissues. Lovely.
IDasy was interesting....ending not what I expected...and characters not as well developed as I would have thought...
I absolutely loved this book. Though meant for young adults, it was relevant for all ages. I loved the fact that the people in it never gave up!
