When the book is written by a "non-believer", you can bet that it will come under vicious attack by proponents of the religion in question. Such is the case with Under the Banner of Heaven, Jon Krakauer's expose on Mormonism and Mormon fundamentalism.I read Krakauer's Into Thin Air and was riveted by his writing on the subject of Mt. Everest. I would not place this work in that category, but found it be a very instructive primer on the origins and background of the Mormon religion and its various fundamentalist offshoots.The book essentially tells two stories, the threads of which alternate throughout the book. In one thread, Krakauer tells the story of Joseph Smith, the founding of the Mormon religion and its evolution to the present day. In the other thread, he explores the various fundamentalist offshoots of Mormonism through the prism of a vicious double murder committed by a pair of its proponents.It is difficult to argue with most of the facts presented in relation to the founding and evolution of Mormonism. As Krakauer points out, it is a religion of such recent vintage that the historical record is quite clear. He does make a few assumptions and extensions which have earned him the ire of the official church. In those cases, however, he states his grounds for doing so quite well. It is doubtful that anyone except a true believer in Mormonism would ever write a history to the liking of the church.The beliefs and practices of some of the fundamentalists profiled in the book are scary in their level of extremism, however, they take their beliefs directly from the pages of Joseph Smith, the founder of the religion. Polygamy, or plural marriage, was one of the chief tenets of his church, and one that was stubbornly clung to for many years by the leaders of the church. It can hardly be argued that many heinous instances of statutory rape and sexual child abuse have resulted and continue to occur.While Mormonism has come under attack throughout its history, both for some of its practices and the highly dubious circumstances surrounding its founding (Joseph Smith was likely no more than a charlatan and a fraud who concocted a religion that guaranteed him access to a never ending cache of nubile virgins), very few of the world's religions have better legs to stand on. Old Testament Christianity is filled with barbarous practices and outlandish fables (Noah's Ark, parting the Red Sea, burning bushes). Islam, ditto. I'm not even going to mention Scientology.So, before anyone tears off on a rant concerning Mormonism, just make sure your own house is in order. If you want a quick and dirty outline on Mormon beliefs and foundations, this is a good place to start. If you want a good example of the effects of extremism (not limited to Mormonism) this is also a good example.

A friend recommended this book as a horror story. We are both fans of Jon Krakauer and he has a lot of credibility with both of us. Jon does a fair and factual history of the Mormon church and the rise of polygamy and the FLDS. While the Mormon church has denounced polygamy and the FDLS, this sect continues to thrive in Arizona, Texas, Mexico, Canada and they are now moving into South Dakota. In addition to the background and history, Krakauer zeroes in on several stories of individuals within the church, their exploitation and their escapes. He doesn't sensationalize the stories but uses the stories to explain the impact of the absolute control the FLDS prophets have over all the inhabitants in these FDLS communities where they make their own laws and take advantage of federal and state social programs even while they openly distain the government. Why a horror story? The people in these communities are emotionally, physically and sexually abused. Men of 40 and 50 take "brides" who are 12 and 13 years old. Their parents willingly give them over to these prophets thinking it will assure them a place in heaven. These people think this is normal and the rest of society is heathen. It is an alternative universe, but it goes on here in the US.

For me the book is 'a page turner' for i could not put it down following the first ten pages. Learning of the development of the LDS faith through Joseph and his followers is clearly explained and w/out prejudice. The information regarding FLDS families enables one to understand the evolution of plural marriages, [which are deplorable --- my personal opinion]. Had no idea why the book was purchased, other than having previously read one of his books. Great writer! Will purchase more of his books.

Before you buy, be aware that the author is an atheist. There is a constant subtle belittling of any type of belief in God, you get the feeling that he finds faith ridiculous & something for unintelligent people.There are some very interesting historical tidbits about the LDS church & its beginnings that I did not find in other books (I've read about 20). Some of the footnotes are fascinating. It is more about Mormon history & how the violence & control developed than about the one incident of murder in 1984 that is referred to on the cover.

LIke the author, most of admire the way the Mormon religion generally has a very healthy family oriented approach to life. The idea of golden tablets that are lost (of course) and an angel with a language only the founder can understand (of course) and some of the hypocrisy of the revelations are just part of the basis of most religions. After all they are faith based not fact based. It was a good over view of the beginnings of the LDS Church and the real perils of polygamy when it is mixed with religious authority abuse. All in all it is a good read.

An excellent, thought-provoking dose of realism. Loved the audio book as it is read by the actual author. This story speaks to many who are disgusted with the hypocrisy and violence often associated with religious fundamentalism. Very well organized, well-written, and a pleasure to absorb. Highly recommended.

My grandson loves anything peppa..however if you’re eyesight is limited bypass these books the words are so small I now need glasses 👓 for my glasses!! 😬 👎

At first I thought dang, these books are so tiny! But my daughter (17 months) just flipped out over everything about this set. She was so proud walking to the library, announcing "books!" as she carried her set. And the size is perfect for her little hands. She loves Peppa and I can see her growing well with these as her language skills develop.

Very cute and fits perfectly in those little hands. Only this is that my first order was lost in transit; however, I called and had a replacement sent to me.

Great product. The books are hard cardboard. Perfect for my 2 year old granddaughter to "read" and "read" again! It's a seek and find series so real fun for her.

This book is the probably the best introductory resource to a complex topic. Each chapter focusses on a particular kind of financial market, and they are written in a manner that enables the reader to choose how deeply they want to explore the market. For example, I wanted a simple working knowledge, and the first 5-6 pages of each chapter were sufficient to gain a high level understanding.

An excellent over view of the financial markets. I wish I had read this book, or one like it a long time ago.

I knew nothing about financial markets before this book. It is a very simple and easy book for you to start understanding the financial market dynamics!

If you have money that is invested, and you want to learn more about the basics of the different financial markets then this is the book. It covers nearly all the different financial markets and gives a good amount of detail to how they work, what common used words mean and important history about that market.A must read for all Beginning-Intermediate investors or speculators interested in finance/investing.

Really tells you a lot of the workings of the various financial markets, especially conditions and changes after the crisis. As a young professional just getting my feet wet in studying financial markets (and with a more theoretical economics background) this has been pretty useful.

Definitely liked the fact that every market has been covered in the book. Doesn’t leave you wondering about things like, “what’s a derivative?” Or “what is a futures market?” when you read them. It is however a bit complex for beginners.

I needed this as a textbook for a graduate course, so it wasn't something I just picked up to read for fun. That said, it is a well laid-out approach to learning about financial markets. It has many clear examples and plenty of statistics to back up its points.

Russell's story is framed within a speech he gave on the brink of America's entry into WWII, in which he expounds his life and philosophical journey. Russell's story is also framed by the creators working in Greece, as they discuss and mold his life into a narrative structure. One of the most prominent themes is the conflict and symbiosis between madness and logic. The fear of madness haunts Russell because of childhood trauma, as he neurotically pushes himself toward what he conceives of as its opposite, a system for certainty. Inventive, with both subtle and overt narrative techniques, the comic form organizes the complex ideas into a simpler system, combining to form a smart and engaging journey through the ambiguity of truth. June 15, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis graphic novel attempts to tell the history of the quest for the foundations of mathematical logic, as epitomized through the life and career of Bertrand Russell. It explores the vigorous (and ultimately futile) efforts of philosophers to find a firm basis for irrevocable truth, as built on the foundations of mathematics. A subsidiary theme is the peculiar relationship between such efforts and "madness" (as we used to call it), as indicated by the several individuals engaged in these efforts who teetered on the borders of sanity. Russell is central to the story -- indeed the novel purports to portray his boyhood, adolescence, early career, first marriage, and publication (with Alfred North Whitehead) of "Principia Mathematica." His intellectual encounters with Ludwig Wittgenstein are portrayed, as are fictionalized (i.e., entirely made- up) encounters with Georg Cantor, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt Gödel. An extended appendix provides introductions to the historical figures alluded to in the graphics, along with summaries of such terms and topics as "algorithm," "predicate calculus," "Vienna Circle," and "Russell's paradox.""Logicomix" is an ambitious and inventive work that has brought arcane aspects of mathematical logic and intellectual history to a new audience. The work brims with ideas, passion, and drama. I found the graphics skillfully done, the only flaw being the somewhat wooden and repetitious portrayals of people. Imaginative portrayals abound, all in full color, and sometimes with a single scene filling an entire page.Despite this book's ambitions, as a one-time philosophy major and a long- term admirer of Bertrand Russell, I cannot wholeheartedly share the great enthusiasm of many other readers. (Of more than 140 reviews at Amazon, only three rate it below 3 stars). First, I found the book's dealings with philosophy to be superficial - less than one would get in a freshman- level college lecture. Second, the authors repeatedly interject themselves into the story with cartoon panels full of argumentative dialogue and (oftimes) peripheral trivia. Personally, I found the device distracting and annoying.Third, contrary to many reviewers, this is not a biography of Russell. Its portrayal of Russell's life is full of outright inventions that bear no relationship to reality. In contrast to the account in "Logicomix", the newly orphaned baby Bertrand Russell was not deposited all alone at his grandparents' house; he moved there along with his older brother. His grandfather was not a spry gentleman who danced in his garden, but a frail, wheelchair bound man of 83. His grandfather did not introduce the boy to his library, leading young Bertie to resolve to return and investigate the locked cabinet of forbidden books - after all, Bertie was only three when he came to live with his grandparents, and his grandfather died when he was six. It was not a tutor who introduced Russell to Euclid's theorems, but his own brother Frank, also living at the estate. And then there's the running theme of the strange howlings that emanate from the attic, disturbing Russell's sleep for years -- these are revealed to emanate from an insane uncle who lives therein. This is a wholesale invention that owes more to Jane Eyre than to reality. There was no uncle in the attic, nor did the young Bertrand ever hear or imagine ghostly howlings. Why the authors felt inclined to invent such stories is hard to imagine. All of the chapters abound with inventions likely to mislead the reader into thinking them factual.In the afterword to the book, the authors cheerfully admit to having invented "deviations from fact," insisting that their work be regarded as a "graphic novel" rather than a work of history. In their defense, one could argue that the invented encounters between Russell and other historical figures (e.g. Cantor, Frege, and Gödel) reflect actual encounters of the protagonist with their written ideas. One might even stretch the point and argue that the fictional boyhood they invent for Russell represents his later memories of a lonely boyhood and his adult fears of the possibility of insanity. Personally, I wish the book authors had not felt compelled to invent a fictionalized life for the protagonist. Russell is after all one of the 20th century's most interesting historical figures. The version of Russell's life portrayed will undoubtedly mislead the majority of readers (one reader enthusiastically proclaims: "I now have a far greater interest and understanding in the man and his life after reading this book.") For readers interested in the established facts of Bertrand Russell's life, three excellent biographies and Russell's own autobiography are available.Overall, I am strongly conflicted in judging this work. My disappointment in the historical inaccuracies necessarily costs the book two stars in my rankings. However, the book has its merits, the chief one being that it may introduce to new readers some interesting philosophical questions and the historical figures who have grappled with them.____________Personal note: Most likely, some readers who loved this book will be eager to label my review "unhelpful." I respectfully suggest that the "helpful" / "unhelpful" responses to reviews are not intended to measure one's level of agreement. (One can disagree with a point of view but still regard it as a helpful contribution to respectful discourse, especially when it comes to a work as thought- provoking as this one.)

August 17, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIn this book, we see some of the personality and characteristics, chiefly of Bertrand Russell, but also of other people involved with the efforts to establish a connection between logic and the language, or perhaps, game, of mathematics. This develops a significant picture of people who saw the possibility of making small incremental adjustments via logic to establish significant aspects of mathematics. This, however, was not the world that was unfolding before their efforts. Instead, as with Russell's paradox, small incremental changes were shown sometimes to lead to large, unpredictable changes in meaning. The book tries to capture this by suggesting a proximity of these intellectual activities to madness and the chaos of war. While Russell never crossed the fine line into the distress that nonlinearity can bring with it, some of the people he was pictured to associate with did cross the line, such as Wittgenstein, who actually participated as a soldier in WWI. I liked the book. It gave a flavor for this subtle boundary between civilization and madness. It also suggested that those such as Russell in pursuit of truth at a deep level were coming very close to that line. The people who worked on the book were also depicted. Their task was not this deep philosophical pursuit: They lived their lives calmly remotely from the borderlands. This is an extremely good book for giving an indication of what it means to get close to madness or the chaos of war, and how those far from it can feel insulated, pursuing their mundane purposes on the surface of life. I recommend this book for obtaining a view of the limits of our humanity in pursuit of the truth, but not for any deep philosophical or mathematical insights.

April 14, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSince many other reviews have been written on this book, I would only like to add 1-2 comments that, I think, have not been made. This books is a very serious work. Its content was researched thoroughly. The script was written with care. And the art work was made with extreme care and dedication to perfection. The book took eight and half years (!) to be created. Just pay attention to the details of the drawings and the coloring of the panels in each single page. I have shown this book to graphic artists and painters and they have made only comments of admiration and excitement. Other authors tried to capitalize on the success of this book but their products were not equally good in terms of art and script. For example, look at Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures. The book is printed in black and white cartoons. Forgetting color, the panels are extremely simple, without any details and artistic features. There is no story except narration of a topic.Logicomix has set the bar of graphic novels so high that will be very hard for any other author to match it --- let alone surpass it --- without serious and long term work on a project.

This graphic novel attempts to tell the history of the quest for the foundations of mathematical logic, as epitomized through the life and career of Bertrand Russell. It explores the vigorous (and ultimately futile) efforts of philosophers to find a firm basis for irrevocable truth, as built on the foundations of mathematics. A subsidiary theme is the peculiar relationship between such efforts and "madness" (as we used to call it), as indicated by the several individuals engaged in these efforts who teetered on the borders of sanity. Russell is central to the story -- indeed the novel purports to portray his boyhood, adolescence, early career, first marriage, and publication (with Alfred North Whitehead) of "Principia Mathematica." His intellectual encounters with Ludwig Wittgenstein are portrayed, as are fictionalized (i.e., entirely made- up) encounters with Georg Cantor, Gottlob Frege, David Hilbert, and Kurt Gödel. An extended appendix provides introductions to the historical figures alluded to in the graphics, along with summaries of such terms and topics as "algorithm," "predicate calculus," "Vienna Circle," and "Russell's paradox.""Logicomix" is an ambitious and inventive work that has brought arcane aspects of mathematical logic and intellectual history to a new audience. The work brims with ideas, passion, and drama. I found the graphics skillfully done, the only flaw being the somewhat wooden and repetitious portrayals of people. Imaginative portrayals abound, all in full color, and sometimes with a single scene filling an entire page.Despite this book's ambitions, as a one-time philosophy major and a long- term admirer of Bertrand Russell, I cannot wholeheartedly share the great enthusiasm of many other readers. (Of more than 140 reviews at Amazon, only three rate it below 3 stars). First, I found the book's dealings with philosophy to be superficial - less than one would get in a freshman- level college lecture. Second, the authors repeatedly interject themselves into the story with cartoon panels full of argumentative dialogue and (oftimes) peripheral trivia. Personally, I found the device distracting and annoying.Third, contrary to many reviewers, this is not a biography of Russell. Its portrayal of Russell's life is full of outright inventions that bear no relationship to reality. In contrast to the account in "Logicomix", the newly orphaned baby Bertrand Russell was not deposited all alone at his grandparents' house; he moved there along with his older brother. His grandfather was not a spry gentleman who danced in his garden, but a frail, wheelchair bound man of 83. His grandfather did not introduce the boy to his library, leading young Bertie to resolve to return and investigate the locked cabinet of forbidden books - after all, Bertie was only three when he came to live with his grandparents, and his grandfather died when he was six. It was not a tutor who introduced Russell to Euclid's theorems, but his own brother Frank, also living at the estate. And then there's the running theme of the strange howlings that emanate from the attic, disturbing Russell's sleep for years -- these are revealed to emanate from an insane uncle who lives therein. This is a wholesale invention that owes more to Jane Eyre than to reality. There was no uncle in the attic, nor did the young Bertrand ever hear or imagine ghostly howlings. Why the authors felt inclined to invent such stories is hard to imagine. All of the chapters abound with inventions likely to mislead the reader into thinking them factual.In the afterword to the book, the authors cheerfully admit to having invented "deviations from fact," insisting that their work be regarded as a "graphic novel" rather than a work of history. In their defense, one could argue that the invented encounters between Russell and other historical figures (e.g. Cantor, Frege, and Gödel) reflect actual encounters of the protagonist with their written ideas. One might even stretch the point and argue that the fictional boyhood they invent for Russell represents his later memories of a lonely boyhood and his adult fears of the possibility of insanity. Personally, I wish the book authors had not felt compelled to invent a fictionalized life for the protagonist. Russell is after all one of the 20th century's most interesting historical figures. The version of Russell's life portrayed will undoubtedly mislead the majority of readers (one reader enthusiastically proclaims: "I now have a far greater interest and understanding in the man and his life after reading this book.") For readers interested in the established facts of Bertrand Russell's life, three excellent biographies and Russell's own autobiography are available.Overall, I am strongly conflicted in judging this work. My disappointment in the historical inaccuracies necessarily costs the book two stars in my rankings. However, the book has its merits, the chief one being that it may introduce to new readers some interesting philosophical questions and the historical figures who have grappled with them.____________Personal note: Most likely, some readers who loved this book will be eager to label my review "unhelpful." I respectfully suggest that the "helpful" / "unhelpful" responses to reviews are not intended to measure one's level of agreement. (One can disagree with a point of view but still regard it as a helpful contribution to respectful discourse, especially when it comes to a work as thought- provoking as this one.)

In this book, we see some of the personality and characteristics, chiefly of Bertrand Russell, but also of other people involved with the efforts to establish a connection between logic and the language, or perhaps, game, of mathematics. This develops a significant picture of people who saw the possibility of making small incremental adjustments via logic to establish significant aspects of mathematics. This, however, was not the world that was unfolding before their efforts. Instead, as with Russell's paradox, small incremental changes were shown sometimes to lead to large, unpredictable changes in meaning. The book tries to capture this by suggesting a proximity of these intellectual activities to madness and the chaos of war. While Russell never crossed the fine line into the distress that nonlinearity can bring with it, some of the people he was pictured to associate with did cross the line, such as Wittgenstein, who actually participated as a soldier in WWI. I liked the book. It gave a flavor for this subtle boundary between civilization and madness. It also suggested that those such as Russell in pursuit of truth at a deep level were coming very close to that line. The people who worked on the book were also depicted. Their task was not this deep philosophical pursuit: They lived their lives calmly remotely from the borderlands. This is an extremely good book for giving an indication of what it means to get close to madness or the chaos of war, and how those far from it can feel insulated, pursuing their mundane purposes on the surface of life. I recommend this book for obtaining a view of the limits of our humanity in pursuit of the truth, but not for any deep philosophical or mathematical insights.

Since many other reviews have been written on this book, I would only like to add 1-2 comments that, I think, have not been made. This books is a very serious work. Its content was researched thoroughly. The script was written with care. And the art work was made with extreme care and dedication to perfection. The book took eight and half years (!) to be created. Just pay attention to the details of the drawings and the coloring of the panels in each single page. I have shown this book to graphic artists and painters and they have made only comments of admiration and excitement. Other authors tried to capitalize on the success of this book but their products were not equally good in terms of art and script. For example, look at Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures. The book is printed in black and white cartoons. Forgetting color, the panels are extremely simple, without any details and artistic features. There is no story except narration of a topic.Logicomix has set the bar of graphic novels so high that will be very hard for any other author to match it --- let alone surpass it --- without serious and long term work on a project.
