It turns out the answer is No. Mr. Collins got his 30 years experience on the burner & managed to write a succinct yet not trivializing, thorough yet not a huge tome that can be a new-age reference to an old subject. By choosing his examples carefully he made even those things I knew feel fresh and inspiring. The author decision to leave out the clamoring tools and aids out of his scope (except jQuery which he needed to explore DOM) kept his explanations clear and the reader's mind focused on the main road. That turned out to be a bonus in fact for both new and returning reader. By understanding the basic & latest capabilities of the web triad one now is in better position to see what he needs for the task at hand. If one buys the Kindle version, there is a limited number of devices to which one can download this (as in only a few -- iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, iPhone2, iPhone3, as you upgrade phones or PCs, etc.), which does not seem to be the case with any other title I have seen so far in my library. This points out two important problems: 1) that there is a limit on Amazon Kindle that not many people are aware of and will seriously impact my future purchases with Kindle versions, and 2) that this publisher decided to actually invoke this as some kind of DRM. Now, not only will I never read this book, but I will certainly never use or buy their hardware, and will hesitate to buy from Kindle again in the future."This book cannot be downloaded because license limit exceeded" => "This customer will never purchase from you again because of your horrible DRM implementation". Good riddance.

It is nice to have a comprehensive and well written book on the propeller. This volume starts from the beginning and does a good job of explaining how to work with the very unique parallel processingn design of the propeller. It also emphasizes use of library objects that come with the development software or are downlaods. These objects really make using the propeller the powerhouse that it is even for less technically savvy hobbyists like myself.After plugging in an $8 dollar prop, I can, within minutes, be producing sounds, voices, text and graphics displays, interfacing via serial or XBee and reading sensors and the like. These are things that the prop does intrinsically without all the expensive extra hardware usually needed to do these things. The book includes these things. We sure have come a long way from blinking LEDs (Your first task in the book).The propeller is a parallel design, which to my knowledge is unique. Also, the SPIN language is different and programming a prop is unique enough for almost everyone to need a good orientation like this book. Given that, I do recommend that you purchase this book if you intend to use the propeller especially if you aren't already a mega electrical engineer. (They can probably get by with the excellent help files that come with the prop software).One criticism; the second half of the book has some rather lengthy projects that don't always lend themselves perfectly to the textbook format. Also, some of the assembly language examples (only a few) included doesn't seem to fit the scope of the book. Overall though, I consider Programming and Customizing the Multicore Propeller to be an invaluable resource.

An adequate reference from the development group and authors at Parallax, this book serves to enable proficient programming of the powerful,8-cog Propeller microcontroller chip. Don't expect too much theory-based material, as the reference book is meant to be more of a practical reference. Therein lies its weakness. More theory would have helped to clarify many of the cloudy topics presented. One example of this glaring oversight comes to mind. The Propeller is capable of analog-to-digital conversion via an onboard converter, yet the author fails to expound on the characteristic, and instead recommends an ancillary discrete device, the MCP3208, for analog-to-digital conversions. There is even a building block object for the MCP3208 to facilitate interfacing with the Propeller. Why? Is there a problem with the internal Propeller's ADC? I was led to believe so. On the other hand, the experimenter will find an abundance of practical examples that can be readily implemented. In summation, my goal was to learn Propeller programming, and I did, but I was forced to search other references in my endeavors to achieve that goal.

I have read a lot of microprocessor books over the years, and typically find that they are either written by a manufacturer as a reference, or by an end-user who utilized the chip only one way. This book is very, very much different from that. It's written by some of the very best Propeller users out there. The book is incredibly readable - I literally read this book from cover to cover over one weekend - it's that good. No amount of forum "lurking" or OBEX code perusal can even come close to how well written and laid out each chapter is. This book is a wonderful, must-have addition to any Propeller user, and for that matter, any microprocessor user in general. If you read this book, and are not using Propeller's - you will be soon. Kudo's to McGraw Hill. Publish more books on the Propeller like this. I'll buy every one of them.

As a beginner to electronics with limited hobby level experience in programming computers, I am very impressed with "Programming and Customizing the Multicore Propeller Microcontroller." The book begins with a description of the multicore Propeller and an introduction to the Spin language used to program it. Debugging tools and practices are discussed followed by an overview of sensor basics with examples. Eight interesting projects fill the remainder of the book, with topics ranging from a balancing robot to an HVAC green house model. My favorite project is the chapter on wirelessly networking Propeller chips. In this chapter we are taken through the steps required to wirelessly network a robot with a compass and a PING))) ultrasonic sensor, an accelerometer/inclinometer, and a display. The communication is provided via XBee 802.15.4 modem/transceivers. The final result is a robot that can follow a heading, turn based on wireless input from an accelerometer board (steering wheel), and wirelessly transmit useful information back to the tv display, such as bearing, distance to objects, bar indicators for drives, and signal strength.Anyone from beginner to advanced skill levels will find this book educational, interesting, and engaging.

All I can say is "wow"! What a great series. The characters develop in such a way that you feel their struggles and personal growth. They are amazing people and I can't wait to see what happens in the next set of books. There's so much to look forward to!

A good book to end the series on. Some common ideas that were used in the past but seem to have been forgotten in the future were coming back into play.On the down side, a few punctuation, proof reading and editing errors as wrong names were used several times.

Great series, enjoyed them all. If you like well written hard core combat sf this is the series for you

The entire series is a great read.

Ok i was not as excited about this one as the previous books. Seemed a lot of it was forced at times but i really did like the inclusion of the old CO and how it looks like he is going to help out. Just wasn't too crazy about this one and honestly i am ready to get past the whole earth thing and go to the next part which seems like it will be loads better then this book. Sorry wasn't crazy about it but hope the next one is better :)

As Harris ably demonstrates, food was more than just food- it was a reflection of black politics, black culture, and black identity- what one ate, where it was eaten, how it was eaten and at what times of the day was a political statement.Another plus to reading this book is that Harris maintains a positive, cheerful and optimistic tone throughout, even while mentioning problems such as unequal access to fresh food in poor black urban neighborhoods. She is unapologetic in her desire to accentuate the positive and predict a bright future for African-American food, African-American people, and America as a whole. Overall it's worth a read- I highly recommend it. It made me want to have a long talk with Miss Harris about Africa's influence on the South- some linguists even postulate that the classic "Southern accent" arose from Mandinka slaves trying to speak English! And if you're anything like me, you will be left with an appreciation of the black legacy on American cuisine and a hankering for some home-cooked soul-food delights!

I expected the book to be more about food than it was. Instead, I got a large helping of editorializing on slavery, civil rights, disenfranchisement and complaints about black chefs not being fully recognized. Food and the culinary tastes of Africa were secondary.I understand that the culinary traditions of Africa came to the U.S. on slave ships, but I don't think it warrants 60% of a book on food. I was happy to read the end of the book where Harris emphasized how food has connected African and African-American to each other and to the members of each group. Such community centered around food is replicated across cultures everywhere.The book could use some good editing; hyphenated words midsentence and frequent typos are distracting.

A wonderful panorama of southern life and experience from the black point of view but I must admit that a lot of it parallels that of my white family. This book focuses on food but the real aim is to give an objective picture of black history in the US. I love the anecdotes about shoe box lunches ( like my grandmother would prepare for me for the trip home - train diner food was so expensive!).

Loved learning about the food industry and the lives of blacks as they moved in and out of the food industry. It is very well written.

I have been looking for a book like this one for a while. I recently purchased the MakerBot Rep x2 3D printer as a gift for my nephew (9) and niece (7). We got the 3D printer set up and successfully printed out some sample objects, and the kids were eager to learn more and create their own designs. James did a really good job explaining complex concepts, dry and technical skills in simple and fun ways. All project models in this book are well designed and selected. They are also well arranged in different chapters from easy to difficult, different models illustrate different features of TinkerCAD and different modeling techniques. My nephew learned Minecraft programming, so he picked it up very quickly, but even for my niece who hasn’t learned Minecraft yet, she was also able to follow the book and design the models fairly quickly. I was impressed that she did not lose interest halfway. I was concerned that kids at her age wouldn’t have enough patience to go through it. I think she summarized it well, “it’s fun and cool!”. Now my brother-in-law (who is an engineer) is learning using this book, :)James also did a good job helping readers understand the broader 3d printing ecosystem and community, which I think is very important. He covered the software side such as Autodesk 123D Apps to 3D design, to printing services and platforms such as i.Materialise, Shapeways, Sculpteo, and how everything in the ecosystem work together to create and produce amazing things.There is one feature in TinkerCAD which I think it’s very useful to users, but not mentioned in the book is smart duplicate. It basically creates patterns or shapes with repeating structures, it’s repetitive and tedious done manually. Users can simplify press Ctrl + D to accomplish that. I believe this is a new feature the TinkerCAD team is quite proud of.

this book does walk users through how to use tinkercad (old UI i think, but new UI isn't too much different as far as the normal controls go), and some basic stuff concerning 3d printers, but it is really really basic. If you spend some time on the internet and maybe play tinkercad's tutorials, you'll get much more done. it's a good overview, but I don't think it's much more than that. Goes over tinkercad controls, some 3d printer stuff, thinking of new ideas, mentions shape generators, but doesn't really say much about anything more advanced other than mentioning advanced features exist.

Good basics, although after playing with Tinkercad for awhile, it is pretty easy to figure out just by atching a couple of videos and messing around with it. Pretty simple program, my son loves it. If you learn better from book than tutorial videos and trial and error, I think you will like this book. There is more info in here for expanding on more complex designs as well

I bought Tim Federle's first book, Tequila Mockingbird, and I was thrilled to know there was another! I love books, music, and movies, so this book was right up my alley. I loved the comparisons to the movies and the nice little summaries how each cocktail relates to the film. This is a must have for a movie night with friends. I cannot wait to use this for the next party. Some of my favorites are Sloppy in Seattle, since Sleepless in Seattle on of my favorite movies. This is neat since it is divided into film genres and even food recipes. This book is simply fun to read and amazing to have for your collection!

This was a gift for my grown daughter. She wanted it and was so happy that I got it for her, It's really cute and I can see why she wanted it. The Cocktails are named after old movies or parts of old movies, and it's done in very good taste. I would recommed this to anyone. Really makes a great gift.
