I bought this book to put on a shelf for décor in my son's nursery and not knowing to much about the storyline, but it's one of my kids' favorites. My 1 year old loves the "move along!" parts and my almost 4 year old loves the story. The illustrations are gorgeous and hold the interest of both my children.

I have bought this book for multiple kids ranging from 2-8 and they all love it. The colors and illustrations are vibrant and adorable. I recommend this book for everyone!

I enjoyed reading this book if you can apply world "enjoy" in the case study of totalitarian goverment. This book is very well written. I love the masterful combination of personal stories and socio-political framing. I grew up in USSR and moved to US in early 90s and this book spoke to me. The author does excellent job portraying Soviet and post Soviet world and people in all of it sad and at times gruesome glory.I think for many readers this book will provide deep understanding of why Russia is what it is now and why Putin is is popular. It is also a lesson to all of us on how democracy can slip right thought our fingers.

When I looked up “The Future Is History” on Amazon and saw the 1-star reviews left by obvious trolls, I just *knew* this book had to be dangerously good. So I bought it immediately. I had read several of Gessen's meticulous and eye-opening New Yorker pieces, but this book takes it to a whole new level.Gessen tells the story through seven dramatis personae, each “both ‘regular’, in that their experiences exemplified the experiences of millions of others, and extraordinary: intelligent, passionate, introspective, able to tell their stories vividly.” They give first-person accounts of the everyday ordeal of surviving true to oneself in Russia. Like Zhanna, daughter of popular opposition politician Boris Nemtsov and activist in her own right, whose life demonstrates some of the consequences of opposing the regime -- like exile, incarceration and murder. The story of Masha the journalist illustrates the perils of truthtelling. Pioneering psychotherapist Marina Arutyunyan tries to shepherd modern mental health to Russia through lacerating thickets of state-mandated ideology. Openly gay Lyosha tries to advocate for oppressed minorities without getting fired from his precarious university post.Through the lives of the protagonists, Gessen weaves the last century of Russian history. Stalin’s self-cannibalizing reign of terror is particularly chilling: “Stalin’s terror machine executed its executioners at regular intervals. In 1938 alone, forty-two thousand investigators who had taken part in the great industrial-scale purges were executed, as was the chief of the secret police, Nikolai Yezhov.” Stalin once invited an old friend from Georgia to Moscow for a reunion, and after lavishly wining and dining him, had him executed before dawn: “This could not be explained with any words or ideas available to man.”And that is the most astonishing aspect of this book: it is not fiction. The protagonists’ experiences are so logic-defying, so disheartening, and such violations of basic human decency as to exist in a separate universe that no novelist could concoct. And yet, this universe has an internal logic. Perhaps it's best explained through Hannah Arendt, whose three-volume “Origins of Totalitarianism” Gessen deftly scrunches down to a few essential paragraphs: “What distinguishes a totalitarian ideology is its utterly insular quality. It purports to explain the entire world and everything in it. There is no gap between totalitarian ideology and reality because totalitarian ideology contains all of reality within itself.”And yet, the book reads like a novel, which is why I don’t want to give away too much. Do our heroes avoid getting beat up and arrested at the demonstrations? Why is Putin so popular in Russia?One pervasive theme of the book is the hegemony of doublethink over the Russian psyche. Coined by Orwell in “1984”, doublethink is the necessity of maintaining two contradictory beliefs for survival, e.g. publicly supporting the government ideology while knowing that it oppresses your very existence.This is some crazy-making stuff that Russians seem to have been put through for over a century. And yet, there are still people who fight for truth, healing, and freedom. Over and over, they rise to attend banned protests very likely to land them in jail (or worse). Their stories of stupendous bravery and selflessness consistently inspire.And lest you as a Westerner think that you’re somehow safe because, oh, this is something happening elsewhere, please note that the recent rise of authoritarianism in countries like America takes its playbook straight out of Russia. Attacks on the press, construction of alternate realities, propagation of fake news, persecution of minorities, and the shameless grabbing of executive power: it’s all happening right now.And you know what else? We’ve seen it all before: Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao. So don’t read this book just because it’s a riveting account of life in what’s still an undiscovered continent for most Westerners. Don’t read it just because it’s a tour de force of journalistic craft and bravery. Read it because it also informs your life as an American, German, Frenchman, Hungarian, or anyone who values the freedom of human life and ideas. Istanbul native F. Sehnaz Bac studied archaeology at Ege University and has a master's degree in restoration and conservation from the institution's Faculty of Architecture. I love the ease and beauty of these designs. My mandala rocks are being snapped up as soon as I make them.

GORGEOUS book! This is seriously a beautiful book. And if only...I am pretty crafty/artsy and I am going to try a couple of these, but I have my doubts LOL. Most of these are very complex. The book description says "easy-to-follow guide" mmmmm, not really. There are lots of pictures, but they are really small and are not by any means a step-by-step which is what I really wanted. So if you are looking for an instructional book - this is not that. It, however is a book with beautiful pictures and ideas for inspiration. If you can look closely you might be able to figure out how to draw them.I am a little disappointed that there is no real step-by-step but I am not really disappointed in the book as a whole. It is still a beautiful book and I can look at it over and over. It does have a lot fo great ideas in it! Now if only I can duplicate them :-) I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Dover Crafts - Thank You!

About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing a sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components. Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. He lives in a Northern Arizona wilderness area, where he has his own workshop for prototype fabrication and projects that he writes about for Make magazine.

We finally got this book after it sat pre-ordered in our Amazon cart for a year and a half! Check out the extensive preview in the product description to see if it is what you are looking for. Platt gives a very good description of the purpose of the book when he writes that "...this is a reference book, not a tutorial.," and explains that each entry is made to stand on its own so information may be repeated in other sections. He also states that it is "oriented toward practicality rather than theory."Typical chapters include sections telling you (with words, diagrams, and photos): "What it Does" "Symbol Variants" (diagrams showing different schematic symbols used)"How it Works""How to Use it""Variants" (Similar components and also if it comes in surface-mount, etc)"Values" (Numbers associated with it such as amp rating, etc.)"What Can Go Wrong" (Things you might screw up when working with the component. Very helpful!)Some entries also have information telling you the pros and cons to using one component over another.We use the book as an educational source for me (Non-Science degree) and as a refresher for my husband (Electrical Engineering degree) and it helps us to figure out the best components to use in our own electronics projects. Lots of pictures and figures to reference.Excellent reference book and I will again be waiting for the third book! I used to poke fun at all the people who would moan about George R.R. Martin doing anything except finishing his series, but I had to check myself when I had thoughts of doing a Google Alert for this author to make sure he was still writing books!

If you are a beginner, a hobbyist, or just someone who is interested in learning about different electrical components, you will absolutely enjoy this series. In this book, you will find that it provides the most essential information as to what a particular component is, how it is used, and what to expect from it. It is extremely easy to look up any component within the realm of the volume. Instead of having to go to a computer or potable device each time, I find it much easier to go to this book first. Being that this book is one of many volumes it's very easy to flip through its pages, and if you wish, write notes for yourself inside as well. Upon purchase, you will be amazed at just how much useful information there is for each component in each volume. This is volume 2 of an ongoing series. You don't need to buy all the volumes, but I'm a firm believer in such reference books that if you need something from one volume, you'll definitely need something from the others as well. I purchased volumes 1 & 2 at the same time, I just wish that volume 3 would had been available at the same time, but I can appreciate that there is always information being added too. I highly recommend this book series!

Same as the first one. You cant go wrong with this book. It shows you how some components work and the different types of them.

It's decent, and compiles a lot of useful information, but a lot of the information is just paraphrased from wikipedia, and likewise many of the images are from wikipedia.

Platt's Encyclopedia of Components is a great series, very well written with lots of practical information. Looking forward to his volume 3 treatment of sensors.

There is lots of great information. Good companion to the make project books. The other reference books are good too.

It is worth. Have many new components and explain easy understand, nice photos and pictures. Thanks.
