About the Author

Larry McCabe's credentials include an education degree from the University of Arizona, more than thirty years of music teaching experience, over eighty published music books, columns for Living Blues Magazine and Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine, and authorship of the Roy Clark Fiddle Magic Method and the Roy Clark Bluegrass Banjo Bible. He plays electric and acoustic blues guitar, clawhammer and three-finger banjo, fiddle, and other string instruments. During his career, he has taught blues guitar lessons, banjo lessons, fiddle lessons, song writing, music theory, music history, and other subjects. Larry has played in numerous bands including blues, classic country, rockabilly, traditional Irish, and Cajun, and he served on the prestigious W.C. Handy Blues Awards nominating committee for many years. With his wife, Becky, Larry is the owner and publisher of the popular roots music instruction book company Red Dog Music Books. In the 1990s, he taught History of Jazz Music and History of Popular Music in America courses to adult education students at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. As an amateur WWII historian, Larry collected and edited 160 interviews for his book Pearl Harbor and the American Spirit (2004). The material in this book looks great, I've wanted something like this for a long time and I look forward to getting a lot out of it.With the first copy I ordered,the CD wouldn't play at all. I requested an exchange/replacement authorization, and unexpectedly received a replacement a couple of days later, before I had even returned the original,so great service on that I'm happy to say.With the replacement copy, the CD seems good enough for learning purposes,but with a scratchy,inconsistent sound quality that makes a few notes difficult to hear. It sounds somewhat like a worn-out vinyl record. I'd guess some low-quality blank discs have been used in producing this package. I hope this is improved in the future because I'd definitely like to try some of the other books in this series, it looks like this author has a lot of good material to offer!

Put all of your turnarounds in one place. This book has a spiral binding which is a big plus. The turnarounds are all in the key of C, but if you want to learn about turnarounds then learning to transpose is a plus. These can be adapted as intros, used to make up your own licks, or used right out of the book. Great practice tool.Beginners should know how to play twelve and eight bar rhythms and be serious about practicing.

The book is okay. It's a spiral so it opens nicely to use. The problem was the CD that came with the book; it would not run in any of 5 different CD players I tried. When I tried to contact the company, first by email than by snail mail I failed. Red Dog Music Books I found out, if it even exists, sure doesn't want to be contacted. Hence I have the book, and a CD that doesn't work. Not worth the money that's for sure.

An Excellent Choice for the Early Intermediate Blues GuitaristA turnaround is a lick played at the end of a section of music. A blues turnaround would be played in measures 11-12 of a 12-bar blues, or measures 7-8 of an eight-bar blues.Electric urban blues turnarounds are fairly easy to play, and the difference from one to another is subtle. Having the ability to play a variety of turnarounds is an important skill in blues guitar playing. This is the best book I know of that addresses exclusively the subject of electric blues guitar turnarounds.This a book for a VERY ambitious beginner, or an early intermediate guitarist who has an interest in Chicago blues in the classic style of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, etc.The licks are all arranged in the key of C. This is for ease of analysis and comparison. The user is encouraged to transpose the licks to other keys - a worthwhile project for exploring and learning the fingerboard. Very, very good practice for learning the art of blues phrasing.Great book from one of our leading authors. My students (and myself) have consistently benefited from the interesting instruction contained here.

Larry McCabe books are the work of a dedicated teacher who has achieved a high level of respect nationally in the field of music education.Larry asked me to write a review for this book, and I am happy to do so. The object of this book is to teach the art of playing blues guitar turnarounds to a guitarist who has some prior experience but is just beginning to explore electric blues.If a student knows how to bend the strings and perhaps play slurs, slides, and hammers, blues turnarounds are not difficult to play. What is important is to play them authentically and with conviction. This book does a very good job in advancing those objectives.A component of this book that is quite effective is that every phrase is written in the Key of C. The student should then transpose each lick to other keys, a desirable skill that encourages individual incentive and ability to solve arranging problems.The turnarounds sound exactly like the ones played on classic blues recordings by the great artists from Chicago and other urban areas.I know other teachers who swear by Larry's books, and I am one of them. Great book- effective in its aims, ambitious content, fun to work through, and a great value.

What this book does is provide a wealth of them. Learn them, then use them in your favorite blues songs.Transpose to other keys to become more familiar with your guitar fingerboard. Use the turnarounds to improve your string-bending abilities, and your timing of blues phrases over a shuffle beat.The recording is very simple, played for the benefit of learners, very easy to understand and play along with.Learn these turnarounds after you understand blues rhythm playing. As a guitar teacher, I find this book suitable for players who have mastered the rudiments. In my lessons, I often assign the book with, or following, the student's use of Larry's "101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Rhythm Patterns" and the beginning of "Complete Rhythm Guitar Guide for Blues Bands."This book and Larry's "101 Razor-Sharp Blues Guitar Fill-In Licks" will teach you how to play in the gaps when the singer is resting.

Matthew S. Stanford (PhD, Baylor University) is CEO of the Hope and Healing Center & Institute in Houston, Texas, and he teaches in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine and the Department of Psychology at the University of Houston. He is the author of Grace for the Afflicted: A Clinical and Biblical Perspective on Mental Illness and The Biology of Sin: Hope and Healing for Those Who Feel Trapped. Stanford is the cofounder and served as the executive director of the Grace Alliance, a faith-based, non-profit mental health organization that provides services and support to individuals living with serious mental illness and their families. An international speaker, his research on the interplay between psychology and faith has been featured in publications including The New York Times, USA Today, and Christianity Today, as well as websites such as Fox, MSNBC, Yahoo, and US News & World Report. Stanford is a member of the American Psychological Association and a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, where he is the author of over one hundred peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters in psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience. Grace for the Afflicted is written by Matthew Stanford, who holds a PhD in neuroscience from Baylor University. Through his years of research among the mentally ill and those with brain injuries he attempts with this book to help bridge the gap between mental illness and misconceptions about it that are held by much of the Church.In his work, Stanford begins by offering a spiritual perspective on mental illness and its cause rooted in the Fall and original sin. He then discusses the attack on Christians by Satan and address the presence demonic possession plays in the Gospels and it's relation to mental illness. Next, he moves into an introduction to psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy, and notes the concerns many Christians have with these fields and their confusion about whether or not mental illness is real or not.Stanford takes a significant portion of his book to delve into specifics about major mental health disorders, describing their symptoms, causes, and treatments. Finally, he address how we as Christians should address those struggling with mental illness.What I liked about this book:I greatly appreciate people like Dr. Stanford being willing to step up and teach the Church more about mental illness, showing Christians that it is a big issue that needs to be taken seriously. I also enjoyed his thorough explanations of the different major mental disorders which were wonderful for familiarizing someone who is relatively uneducated about mental illnesses. Stanford gave numerous anecdotal examples to describe the characteristics of people suffering from each and how the disorders may be affecting their lives.What I didn't like about this bookI have to admit a major pet peeve here: It drives me nuts when people scrape for texts from Scripture to try and apply to what they are talking about to make their book more "biblical" and therefore more credible. While Stanford definitely knows his stuff in the realm of science, he takes what I consider to be great liberties with the Bible in drawing parallels and identifying what he deems to be mental disorders stories found there.Second, I feel Stanford deals much too tritely with the issue of sin. As a typical Evangelical, he focuses on original sin and how people are born spiritually dead. Whether or not you subscribe to this, I feel there is a major problem when he failed to notice that we all have wounds that motivate us to "sin". Everyone has some sort of core wound, or lie that they believe about themselves. Some people are motivated by their fear of not being good enough, others by their fear by being alone. These are just two examples, but they play pivotal roles in how we navigate life. They also play a huge part in mental illness, and to see significant progress towards mental wholeness, I am convinced these wounds must be addressed.In his section on disorders, Stanford describes why substance abuse disorders are considered sin and not just illness. He says this is because they are initiated out of rebellion and sinful choices. However, he fails to speculate as to why people would involve themselves in these behaviors to begin with - are they self medicating for some reason? Are they trying to escape pain? Do they feel a great need to be accepted? Overly simplistic conclusions about sin and behavior are not helpful.Finally, this book encourages Christians to be gracious and caring towards the mentally ill, but I would argue that it is based more out of cliche texts pulled out of the Bible than a deep focus on the life and personhood of Jesus, and how he is the life changer. But it needs to go so much deeper, and grapple much harder with the complexities of mental illness, the human condition, and the nature of God in Jesus.

I was a bit skeptical at first, when I ordered this book, but after reading it I found it to be pretty awesome. As it sates in the title, it is a clinical and biblical perspective of mental illness. Stanford goes into the various mental disorders and explains their symptoms and etiology. He then relates biblical examples of these disorders and how God uses them for His glory (sounds complex and it is, but the author does a great job of describing this).I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a serious Christian. I totally recommend this book for anyone who is curious about mental illness and the bible - perhaps yourself or a family member with one of these disorders.All in all this is a great book - definite must read for any mental health professional or pastor.

Dr. Stanford’s basic premise is that mental illness can cause sinful behavior, but being sick is not a sin.He presents biblical and medical arguments for why many of the Christian myths and misbeliefs about mental illness are simply not true. One of the most harmful myths held by Christians is that mental illness doesn’t exist because there is not scientific medical test to prove it’s existence. (How about proving the existence of God, while you’re at it, folks?) Dr. Stanford writes:“Mental disorders and traditional medical diseases are diagnosed in a very similar manner, using a set of scientifically derived symptoms or criteria. Blood tests and brain scans are often used to rule out potential causes of the mental illness (e.g., infection, brain tumor, epilepsy). Psychiatry and psychology aren’t voodoo; they are science. And science insists on verifiable data.”He spends the largest portion of the book detailing each category of mental illness from a medical perspective. Then he applies specific biblical principles to help someone with that disorder. He also speaks to family, friends, and caregivers about how to help someone with that disorder.

Persons who suffer from mental illness dare not reveal it in most conservative Christian churches. They simply don't feel accepted or supported. Dr. Stanford's writing is a breath of fresh air for them. I am passing my copy on to my pastor. I would recommend it to any Christian who cares about people. It is written from a Biblical/bio/psychological/social model. The problem tends to arise because if someone is say, depressed, it is often blamed on not being close to Christ, unconfessed sin, etc. What is forgotten is the brain is a highly complex organ, subject to the fall out of the fall, as are the rest of our organs, and all of creation, for that matter. There's a lot that can go wrong. It's amazing that any of us are 'normal'. This book is not a comprehensive text, but hopefully will help us to treat our wounded much more compassionately and in a humble and informed matter. I would think that most who suffer want to be accepted and not immediately judged. The stigma attached to mental illness is sky high in the church. That is the opposite response that Christ calls us to.

Thiis book is the "bible" of NAMI, recommended for everyone who takes care of or interacts with a mentally ill person (who has no insight into their illness). 50% of people with schizophrenia have no insight, which can be part of the illness itself. It's not denial. It is anosognosia. Ultimately, the techniques taught in the book are great for communication skills for any interaction you have with people who are not mentally ill. It's good for spouses, co-workers, friends, enemies, anyone who you want to have a better and more trusting repore with.

I found this book to be a very informative one on the subject. I have recently discovered my son has some mental illness but he doesn't think he has a problem. The author through his own experiences relates how to deal with the difficulty of helping the mental ill without alienating them. In my son's case, the rest of the family has problems communicating with my son because of their attempts to make him realize he needs help. He stays away from them. I highly recommend this book for people who are dealing with someone in this situation.

Having read many books on bipolar and schizophrenia as we have gone through 4 years of trying to figure out what is wrong with our son, I landed on this fine book, way too late. But, I am devouring every page now. The photo on the jacket of the book really hits' home. How many times my son has left home are more than I can count. I would watch him leave and walk away from home, backpack in hand. My son is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has been in and out of treatment for 4 years. He is now in the hospital again, after having gone off of his medications, again, (and self medicating with marijuana and such) and close to having to do another stint at that state hospital. He is only 17, going on 18. I hope he reaches into adulthood. If he were to kill himself as he sometimes says he will do, having read this book and having tried everything within my power to help him, I will come out the other side with some solace for my heart. I know I am powerless to such a disease. Damn mental illness! It's as worse a curse as cancer.I would put down every book you might be reading right now, even from Fuller Torrey, and read this first. Underline and keep going back to the reasoning behind the authors suggestions. (Some of the ideas in the book are usable when dealing with troubled people and youth in general.) Best of luck. I have recommend this book to the therapist now working with my son. I will send one in the mail to his current psychiatrist who could use this for her practice. She is not connecting with my son and it's causing very slow movement in his progress.I so appreciate the author updating the book as time goes on! Hugs to you and all.

This was the first book I read after my adult son was diagnosed within the Schizophrenia spectrum... It seemed like the author was writing about my child!!! I would highly recommend this book to any family member who is going through something like this. My son has been one year out of the hospital and I feel like it is in large part because of the knowledge and skills I learned, put into practice and continue to use to this day that he continues to take his medication and remains out of the hospital.

You never know what you are going to get with an Hourly History book. Some are excellent and a few slide toward the opposite end of the spectrum. This book on Galileo Galilei sits somewhere in the middle.The author spends time telling readers how important Galileo is to the world of science, yet glosses over his accomplishments with quick, one-sentence explanations that fail to educate exactly why Galileo's discoveries were important. The chapter on his trial by the Roman Catholic Church offered some details concerning the teachings of the books, and was the best part of the book far as offering information.The most glaring issue with the book is the writing style itself. The book could use a good editing, and much of the time reads like an average essay written by a student. For instance, the beginning of the sentence "Most of history has referred to Galileo as Galileo..." is understandable yet flawed. An editor might have changed this to something like "Most written history has referred to Galilei as Galileo" in order to convey the author's meaning.If this was a solitary instance of mangling the English language, it could have been overlooked. Unfortunately, these types of errors are spread throughout the book, and some paragraphs contain unrelated items that would have been better served if the author had provided more details on each subject.Fulfilling its usual promise, Hourly History will provide highlights from Galileo Galilei's life and present them in a concise form that can be read in an hour or less. Galileo Galilei was born in Pica, Italy in 1564 during the Discovery Era. Galileo became known as Galileo when people began calling him by his first name. He was a mathematician, a teacher, a lecturer, a true Renaissance Man, well educated, he loved Art and Poetry, played the lute and compromised music. In 1609 he invented the telescope which opened up a whole new world for him. He discovered the Milky Way in the galaxy, discovered Jupiter and it's moons and he studies Saturn and Vensus. He wrote and published 'The Starry Messenger'.Galileo was an amazing man in all his studies and adventures. Five centuries later people are still studying his life and is admiring him as a great man. This is one man changed the world in many ways. Some years of his life was rough but he never gave up. The book is very educational and entertaining, what a great world we live in. I Thank all the authors for writing these Hourly History Books, they are so educational. I enjoy reading them.

It was all so interesting and I loved learning more about Galileo's life and accomplishments.I'm super intrigued by a lot of people who lived in the Italian Renaissance but I've always been especially interested by Galileo Galilei, his genius and the way he challenged the Church. He's one of my favorite historical figures to read about. And obviously without him and his discoveries I'm sure we wouldn't be where we are today.This quick read gives us information about things like his early life, his controversial theories, his trial and when he passed away. Like I said I loved reading every chapter so this time I couldn't say what my favorite was. I did enjoy reading about the beginning of his career a lot, though.Overall, yet another great Hourly History book that I enjoyed so much. I learned a few new things about Galileo, which is always a bonus for me with nonfiction. Definitely recommended!

Izzy Kalman, a school psychologist and psychotherapist living in Staten Island, New York, is an expert in teaching people how to deal with anger and aggression. He is an instructor with Cross Country University, presenting his training seminars, Anger Control Made Easy and Bullying and Sibling Rivalry, to mental health professionals throughout the United States. He has been keynote speaker at conferences on childrenÂ’s aggression. Izzy has developed unique role-playing procedures that produce almost immediate improvement in relationship problems. His Staten Island Community TV series, Help, TheyÂ’re Driving Me Crazy, presented his approach to problems in getting along with people. IzzyÂ’s greatest passion is helping children who are victims of relentless teasing and bullying. Following the massacre at Columbine, he created and authored the website Bullies2Buddies.com and developed a comprehensive school violence prevention program called Victim-Proof Your School. The website teaches kids how to stop being victimized by their peers and instructs parents and teachers how to quickly and easily reduce fighting between children. He lessons for victims are also available as an audio CD program, How to Stop Being Teased and Bullied Without Really Trying. Izzy is working on a parenting book on sibling rivalry. The child of Holocaust survivors, Izzy was born and raised in the Bronx. He earned a Bachelor's degree in psychology from City College in 1974 and a Master's in clinical psychology from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia in 1978. Fulfilling a childhood dream, he then moved to Israel, where he began work as a school psychologist married a beautiful dark-skinned woman of Yemenite ancestry and had his first two children. In 1988 he moved back to the U.S. with his young family. Their third child was born in 1992.

Excellent help from Izzy and his kid. The kid's voice is very pleasant to listen to and this CD offers helpful examples for using this new way of thinking and behaving to reduce problems. I would recommend trainings Izzy does offer as well as this easy to listen to two part audio. The first cd of it is fantastic. The second starts off a bit extreme sounding discussing the worst of what revenge kids do sometimes take and warns listener to think before doing such things. Certainly that for most kids is not reasonable but for those who are desperately isolated and alone perhaps they do need to hear that part. I wish that part of the second cd wasn't part of this but overall it's excellent and helpful. Way to go Izzy for making this so kid user friendly!

We started listening to it, I like Izzy Kalman's books and thought this would be great for my kids. It is good, but it is read by a child, who does a great job by the way, however, it's not easy for me to listen to this particular narrator. The information is great as always. I think it's a very good resource for those looking to find ways to combat bullying. I appreciate the work that was put into making this cd.

When I was a kid I was bullied by my brothers and then by my 4th grade teacher, and telling my parents or the school principal never helped. They always told me to stop crying, saying I was just encouraging the bullying, but they never gave me any advice about how to make the bullies stop, because they didn't know how, either. I ended up feeling blamed for my own abuse and even more helpless. They always talked to the bully, of course, but that only made it worse, just like Izzy Kalman says. He is spot-on with his approach. Research in every country all over the world has proven that anti-bullying programs where children report bullying and the bullies are punished does not work. Kalman's clear and simple approach to teaching children how to give bullies a non-threatening response they don't expect, which he can prove will get bullies to stop being mean to them and, thus, help children to stop being victims has the power to change children's lives instead of leaving them at the mercy of their own helplessness. It has also been shown that a large percentage of bullies are angry former victims, so helping the victims to change can kill two birds with one stone. Kalman's methods need to be adopted by every school district and every family in the world. The planet would be a much better place for it.

I got this CD and Izzy Kalman's book when my son was in 4th grade, when bullies were making his life, and ours, miserable. Nothing else was working to solve the problem, and the school wasn't being any help at all. Kalman's book and CD changed our lives. Izzy explains things in a way that kids and adults can really associate with and understand. Utilizing the simple methods explained by Izzy Kalman made all the difference in the world.

Izzy knows his stuff!!! I have used his strategies with kids in the school where I work and it works with first graders as well as with high schoolers. So often the strategies that are suggested are so general and difficult for students to apply to their own situation. This strategy is specific and actually gives them the actual words to say or to think about and this is an ACTION plan, rather than just a THINKING plan. That is what appealed to me as a counselor and seems to appeal to the students. They can practice what to say, then making it more natural once the problem occurs. I'm 34 years old and have been bullied since I was an infant. I never learned how to stop the bullying, it continued into adulthood. I constantly read books on dealing with difficult people etc and all of the advice was lame!!! I own this CD and the book and it really has the information that I needed to cut the bullying out of my life- I loaned it to some friends and now decided I will purchase another copy of the cd. The information in this book is brilliant and it really makes sense - not at first - but as soon as I implemented the ideas the bullying stopped! My life changed. The information is aimed at children but it works for anyone.

I notice an important similarity between all of the negative reviews to this book: None of the nay-sayers have tried Kalman's approach. People that follow his advice all say it works. People who criticize it do so from their old beliefs. Kalman isn't a persuasive writer and much of his writing is awkward, but the methods work. I suggest people try it, even if they disagree with it. You can always "go tell on the mean kids" later if it doesn't work.

I understand textbooks are a tool for information; there are no guidelines for what makes a great textbook because let's be serious, it's rare to find a textbook that makes the content interesting enough to read for fun. So these complaints are real, it's not that the content for the CLASS is boring, it's that this book is just poorly put together.I was really excited for this class since it's an area that I'd like to work in the future, but this book is just horrible horrible. My biggest complaint is its redundancy. I feel like the editor just sent out topics for random nurses to write about, and stuck them in the book without regard to flow, redundancy, etc. If I have to read the words, "Community/public health nursing has three/four components...(insert whatever components each author decides are most important)" one more time I might have a stroke. It's comparable to reading a new book with each chapter, with the same topic but different criteria for what comprises PHN.Thank goodness my clinical for this class teaches me something, because I'm not getting anything from this. But the kindle version is really nice, it's easy to highlight and you can read all your highlights on a single page without having to skip around, and it has a nifty flashcard tool that I haven't utilized yet, but looks promising. But the textbook itself...yeah no. But I had to get it anyway so what can I do.

Required for class, and hands down, THE worst written text I've ever had the displeasure of reading (or attempted to read)! If I was actually interested in becoming a community health nurse, I might be a little less resentful, but even then, the writers MUST attempt to keep the reader involved and interested in the material they're presenting. This was not the case in this book. So much information is given and so many details are listed that I could not focus properly on what I was suppose to learn. I passed, but that's because the class ran for only 1/2 a semester and I didn't have to have an in-depth knowledge of every aspect the writers presented.The best thing about this text...sending it packing for trade-in.

First off, the quality of the book - a brand new book - is substandard. They put some tear out pages in the front that made the cover pull away from the binding. When you drop the better part of a Benjamin on a book you want it to stand up.Second, the pictures are irrelevant and sometimes outdated. Look at figure 44-5 or the unlabeled one on page 743. What do they add to the subject? Nothing would be my answer. There are many more examples. I mean, thanks for giving a break from the wordy text, but at least make the pictures interesting and relevant.There are attempts to break up the wordy writing with the typical Elsevier "What do you think" and "nursing tip" and some "cutting edge" stuff but it was usually distracting and not informative. Oh, don't forget the "how to" blurbs - probably the most interesting.There are 10 pages before you even get to the table of contents. Ridiculous.I did learn from this book and especially the class, but the book is overpriced, heavy and could really benefit from the concept of bullet points. Also, it is poorly constructed.

Even the online review Q's were crap, which is unfortunate, because usually the Evolve Q's are very helpful. Some of them didn't even have the right answer keyed. If your teacher picks this book for your class, then try to just answer the objectives at the beginning of the chapter, know the terms, and look at the tables. Of course all teachers' test Q's are different.

Rented this book - the corners were kinda frayed & curled back but the text was still readable. Maybe if it was a more interesting topic, I'd be giving it more stars. It wasn't a difficult read - the chapters were laid out ok and the material presented alright, but it was just eh, average. Nothing about this book was memorable or made me think, "OOooo, I wish I had bought it instead of renting it".

This book will not open on my computer with Windows 8.ey discouraging because I would like to have my book open and Word at the same time so I am focused at on area instead of having to flip through a book. The book is heavy and smaller print so that is why I wanted a digital way of access also. Guess my money for the book at least got it on my android tablet but very disappointed in the inability to use it on the computer. Is there a way that we can fix this problem please?????

This book is disorganized and is so filled with APA citations it is painful to read. It does fine on the political/ policy end of things, but for those pursuing direct patient care in the public health sector it is weak. It goes to great lengths to make broad sweeping categorizations of conditions like homelessness, but does an inadequate job of promoting successful or promising interventions.
