With Michael Salinger, she runs Outspoken Literacy Consulting, an organization that runs programs to help students K-12 develop public speaking, comprehension, and writing skills.  Michael Salinger is a poet, performer, and advocate of poetry and performance in education. Wow! What an incredible resource for writing teachers! Sara and Michael have created a framework for students,to stimulate ideas and support them in organizing their thoughts and creating varied ways to express them. They incorporate language, weaving in lessons on vocabulary, simile, metaphor, and personification. Lessons in point of view and repeating themes are provided in multiple text types including narrative, opinion, expository, and poetry. ( a treasure of ideas). At the forefront is writing with purpose! This is such an easy to follow book for teaching writing in an inspirational way. Sara and Michael provide incredible online resources including videos of them in action, and Power point slides to teach every lesson. I believe From Striving to Thriving Writers is going to help guide me to better writing instruction. It provides a structure to teach skills but still holds the importance of choice for students. I have tried one lesson and kids were so successful as they wrote, revised and wrote again. And they had lots of fun because the lesson was very engaging. I had fun too!

Teachers are able to apply strategies from the book right away in their classrooms. The techniques described and examples given provide a fresh approach to writing that is not based on a specific format. This is one of the best books I have found related to teaching students how to write and have fun while doing it. As a curriculum director, I highly recommend this book.

haven’t read it yet but i know it will be awesome. only problem isthis book comes in a weird spiral bound that is bigger than normal. will there be a regular paperback bound book available??

I just received my book, and I love it, however, where do I find the "go sheets"?

I was hooked when I first read From Striving to Thriving by Stephanie Harvey and Annie Ward, so the minute I saw this book I knew it was a MUST READ. I'm so grateful that the message that began in the first book continues in this new book. I believe that these wonderful resources can work in unison so that the reciprocal nature of reading and writing is both acknowledged and celebrated in practice. Wonderful suggestions!

So far, I am impressed with how easy this guide is to use. I was able to flip through the lessons, choose one, log onto the digital resources (link is in the book) and teach a lesson! The first one I tried was the Personification lesson in Framework 5. The lesson in the book was teacher friendly, and the power point photos on the slides were engaging for the students (and a great ready-to-use tool for us busy teachers!). I was able to print out the “Go-Sheet,” pop open the presentation, and start teaching! I liked that I was able to save/rename the power point and add new slides as we went through the co-constructing writing process to create personification poems. Additionally, the way the book is put together is great too--so many examples of student work as well as photos of the lessons in action. And, I like the spiral binding because it allows the book to lay flat when I am teaching. I am looking forward to trying more of the lessons!

I am a veteran English teacher and over the last 18 years I have been introduced to many writing programs. My different districts have changed resources, methodology, and programs many times. After using a few lessons in Striving to Thriving, it's easy to see how this will fit with ANY writing program your school district adapts. Not only in English class too...I plan to share this resource with my team teachers also. There are so many great ways to bring writing cross-curricular.Thanks for an easy to use, meaningful and adaptable resource for our ever-changing curriculum!

I suggested this book for a school book club solely on the strength of the From Striving to Thriving Reading book. That book brought together an incredible amount of research and knowledge about what works in teaching reading. This book seems to ignore the past two decades of writing research and instead wants to send us back to the days of worksheets and scripted, inauthentic writing responses.I do not doubt that using these "frameworks" will get some real neat sounding writing, but if you are a believer in the writers workshop or giving children authentic opportunities to write, this book is not for you.The authors are two world-renowned poets who, as far as I can tell don't seem to have any actual classroom experience, so I guess it shouldn't be surprising how much poetry is in the book. It's just more than a little disappointing that scholastic tried to package this book of worksheets as a compliment to Striving to Thriving Reading, which it does not resemble in the slightest.
