Amazon.com Review
Dorling Kindersley Publishers never fail to create beautiful, engaging children's books, packed with fascinating information. In Celebrations, photographer Barnabas Kindersley teams up with writer Anabel Kindersley and UNICEF to create a fascinating journey exploring the cultural traditions of children all over the world. Harry Belefonte notes in his introduction, "Here is your opportunity to travel by book to nearly every corner of the globe ... [and] join children everywhere in celebrating important events in their lives." In addition to photographs of traditional costumes and customs, each child from the wide range of countries represented gives a first-person account of how holidays are celebrated. Children will enjoy learning about how kids like just like them have fun, and in the process will broaden their cultural horizons. (Ages 8 to 12)

Grade 2-6?A rich, multicultural look at holidays around the world. The celebrations are arranged by season and include: Christmas in Germany, Halloween in Canada, Hanukkah in the U.S., Diwali in India, Hina Matsuri in Japan, and Egemenlik Bayrami in Turkey. Each holiday is shown on a two-page spread with a large photograph of a featured child or children and many smaller captioned photographs of the festivities and the culture. A preface by Harry Belafonte in his role as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF opens the book. It is a superb addition to country/cultural teaching units, and also makes a wonderful lead-in to writing, art, and creative-drama activities used to teach holidays. An enjoyable visual experience.?Stephani Hutchinson, Pioneer Elementary School, Sunnyside, WACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This book was a nightly routine in our house as my girls were growing up.They could not wait to hear about children from all over the globe.Today, I have two young women who have traveled the world. That have passion for being a part of making change.I truly believe this book was part of that early inspiration.Thank you for the incredible stories, the pictures that helped bring the children to life and the reminder we really are more alike than we realize. Now, I am passing that legacy along and giving this book to my future grandchildren. Can't wait to see their eyes light up the way my girls did! Please take the time to purchase. Your eyes will be opened up to bigger things. So grateful we did many years ago....
We are using this book with my 1st grader's geography class. It's great way to introduce kids to other cultures, foods, clothes, etc. while also reminding them that no matter where someone else lives, they are kids just like them.
This book was exactly what I was looking for to teach my son (8) about different cultures around the world. Every populated continent is represented, and the information provided is exactly what kids find interesting: What are other kids' families like? Where do they go to school? What kinds of things do they play with? This book shows the incredible diversity of people around the world while at the same time showing their similarities. This books is also long enough and detailed enough to spend a lot of time going through it piece by piece, having extended conversations on each country and using it as a jumping point to learn more about various countries.
I used to read this book when my children were small (I think it used to be called Children of the World) and bought 2 for them now that they are adults. This is the best book to give them a vision of the world at a young age. They loved this book and remembered it fondly.
I love this book. It has excellent pictures, descriptions and information about different holidays and how they are celebrated around the world. We have actually celebrated some of them ourselves, using this book to help recreate the holiday. We also use it n our homeschooling program. It is a great tool to introduce children to the diversity of culture and religion that exist around the globe.
My mom bought me this book when I was young, only 8 or 9 years old - it was FASCINATING, just a wonderful look into the lives of all these children - even though their lives are VASTLY different from each others, the same questions applied and it was just so interesting seeing how they write their name, who their best friends are, their favorite toys, their favorite food. And even though all the children have such different lives and cultures - you can see such wonderful parallels in their way of thinking. I think this book is just incredible, and when I discovered that over the last decade I managed to misplace my original copy... well, simply had to track down another right away!
We really like this book. As a homeschool mom it is a great resource to show our children how others around the world, children their age, live differently. I was even surprised at some of the information. It is loaded with things like what they do, what kind of school they attend, their heritage, things they eat and etc. It is a very fun way to learn about geography. I would recommend this book to others.
This book will now be part of my Multicultural Library. I love the corful pages and hod the information were presented. I bet my students will enjoy it immensely!
