Journey on the James: Three Weeks through the Heart of Virginia, by Earl Swift

Review

"With humor and insight, Swift narrates his story on a day-by-day basis, telling not only the hazards and the beauty of the river itself, but also of the people he and Martin met along the way. His historical notes, reflecting a great deal of research, add depth to the chronicle. This is no if-it's-Tuesday-it-must-be-Balcony-Falls travelogue, but a lively and colorful recap of a journey savored hour-by-hour. (Ann Lloyd Merriman Richmond Times-Dispatch)"By turns travel narrative, history book and comic adventure, Journey on the James breathes life into the affairs of one of our most beautiful and significant rivers. (Katherine Jackson Style Weekly)"Earl Swift has taken what could have been a disaster-prone journey down Virginia's most famous river and turned it into a delightful piece of writing. While we're chuckling about his less-than-expert attempts to float an inner tube in too-shallow water or maneuver a canoe through rapids that tax his ability, all along he steps off the water to relate the remarkable story of the James. (Garvey Winegar Richmond Times-Dispatch)

This book exceeded my high expectations. It's a first-hand account of the author's 22-day, 430+ mile trip from the source of Virginia's James River near Hightown (altitude 3,000+ feet, near the border of West Virginia) to its mouth at the Chesapeake Bay.The journey begins on foot, on Jacob Hevener's farm, where the author and his friend seek out the barn where rain falling on one side of the roof flows via the Jackson River to the James, while rain falling on the other side of the roof flows eventually to the Potomac. The journey begins on foot, where the Jackson is just a trickle of water. Eventually it deepens and widens enough for the author to take to its waters in an innertube. Further downstream the author is able to continue his journey in a canoe, which takes him on most of the rest of his journey. The final stretch he completes in a kayak. What I wasn't expecting, but really liked about this book, was its weaving of local and regional history into the narrative, for each of the areas that the author traveled through on his journey. This makes me want to find and read similarly written books on other American rivers.

I recently came back from my first visit ever to Richmond, where I was able to view the James from various vantage points. The more I saw of the river, the more it took on a life of its own in my mind. I wanted to know more about its origins and its long run downhill to Chesapeake Bay - so once I came upon Earl Swift's book I knew I had to order it. It turned out to be a great read: well paced, highly informative, occasionally humorous, sometimes poetic, and often thought provoking, not to mention full of intriguing little historical details. I enjoyed this adventure so much that I am giving the book five stars despite its one weakness - no maps! Nevertheless, with the help of Google maps, I was able to follow Mr. Swift every step of the way on his journey through the landscape and through history (at times one and the same thing). So glad he did this - after all, somebody had to!

For those of us who love and canoe the James this book is an excellent companion. Apparently a few of the reviewers have been right ticked off at Earl Swift's writing style, or his mannerisms, or his choice of words, or his choice of topics, maybe they just don't like his hair style. Who knows? I think most of the negative reviews are petty, unfair and not well thought out. Overall the book does what the author set out to do, and that is entertain us with his impressions of the James River and the people who share it with us. I can't find fault with any writer who has the courage to state his or her opinions. I think it is the responsibiltiy of the reader to understand what the book is about, and if the reader doesn't like the content then send it back for a refund. Heated, almost hysterical charges against the author are pretty weak when you actually read the book and digest the message. Swift is a professional writer and treats his subject - the James River - with respect.

Still reading it. Very interesting.

wonderfulRanks right up there with blue highways and waterhorse.Should be assigned reading for Revolutionary and Civil war buffs

Really enjoyable, interesting read about the James River. I've lived near this river, canoed and kayaked it, lost family members to it's unpredictable nature and considered it a part of my Virginia heritage as long as I can remember. I learned alot of new historical facts while reading this book and will think of those events the next time I am on the river in Nelson County.I'm not sure why the prior reviews were so tough, this is not WAR & PEACE......it's just a well written story about one man's mini-adventure on the James.I highly recommend this, especially for those of us that are familiar with the areas Swift writes about. I didn't get the feeling he was mocking the people he met along the river, some of the people around these areas (as in every place in the world) are Ya-hoos.

Great Book!

A "you are there" account of a summer journey with an abundance of history for good measure. I highly recommend it.
