This book is a really interesting collection of surprisingly intimate stories. I never realized how much one object can say about who a person is, and about what they value most. The stories are at the same time heartwarming and bittersweet. While most of the stories resonate on some level, I found myself most drawn to the ones told by the “regular” folks whose names are unfamiliar to me.It is an easy book to read, but a hard one to put down. I found myself reading “just one more story” until I had finished them all. It made me think about what I cherish, why, and what that tells the world about me.

Great read demonstrating what people truly value is what connects them with their past, their joys, and accomplishments. For me a nice respite from a world that seems to increasingly focus on the material and a reminder of what truly matters.

This book is short, sweet, and deeply heartfelt. I laughed and cried several times; it perfectly illustrates how much meaning an object can have in someone’s life. I highly recommend it if you want your heart strings tugged.P.S. My object would be the first edition Harry Potter books I own.

I love books that you can pick up, flip to a page and receive an instant mini-story, a window into a life, a love. What We Keep is a direct communication from someone's core to yours - a confession of what's most important, most cherished, most meaningful. From Melinda Gates (an APPLE computer!!! Heresy!) to Hasan Minhaj and Mark Cuban, this really is a delightful and engaging book you'll want to keep around at home or in the office - it definitely gets you thinking, too, about the things, the mementos we all keep, where they are now, and what they still mean. LOVE this book. Then again, I like slinkys, too ;)

I'm not all the way through this yet, but the stories! I find myself stopping whomever I am sitting near when I'm reading it and reading a page out loud to them. Bill and Naomi had a great idea and followed through with a really interesting collection of stories. It makes you think about what's important!

Interesting perspectives on emotional connection to inanimate objects. This gave me a new appreciation for the things that are special to me, and provided me with the realization that I surround myself with things that are not.

Bill Shapiro's and Naomi Wax's marvelous "What We Keep" explores the inanimate objects we value that animate our spirits. It offers telling glimpses into the human condition by shining a light on the seemingly mundane objects people cherish: a homeless man's rock that keeps him grounded amid a transitory life; a teenager's game puzzle that helps him stay connected to his late mother; a comic book cover drawn by an investment manager when he was young and aspired to a creative life far removed from his current occupation. The list goes on and on, but what is so compelling about these different objects is that they all are located in the same place: the essential human desire to remember where we came from so we can better navigate the journey towards where we are going. I loved this book and so will you.

The bomb. This book is the bomb. Could be a gift for a man OR a woman. Interesting, thoughtful, high quality print.

The White Spider: The Classic Account of the Ascent of the Eiger, by Heinrich Harrer

From Publishers Weekly

At 13,025 feet, the Swiss Eiger doesn't approach the height of Everest or Denali, but the sheer rise and difficulty of its 5900-foot north face keeps it in the company of the world's most celebrated peaks. At the time Harrer (Seven Years in Tibet, originally the sequel to this volume) became part of the first successful summit climb in 1938, the north face of the Eiger was considered the "last and greatest of Alpine problems" left in the world. Originally published in 1959 (with chapters added in 1964 and an index covering subsequent Eiger climbs), this riveting account of his ascent and the history of confronting the EigerAbeginning with the first fatal attempts to conquer the north face in 1935Ais a crisply written paean to the mountain where Harrer first earned recognition as a world-class climber. A simple narrative style brings to life the many obstacles faced by Eiger climbersAsnowstorms, avalanches and a continuous shower of falling rocks among them. Harrer has a Hemingwayesque appreciation of the codes, bravery and rules of conduct governing the closed world of "true mountaineers." And he reserves special contempt for the sensation-seekers who gather to watch deadly feats of climbing from the ground below. Sections that document the evolution of climbing gear (Harrer wore no crampons on his 1938 ascent) and national rivalries in the WWII-era climbing community help make this volume an important contribution to the emerging canon of mountaineering literature. In the 1930s the Eiger Nordwand (North Wall) was considered the last and greatest of Alpine problems left in the world. The White Spider is a portion of the upper face where snow-filled cracks radiate from an ice-field resembling the legs of a spider. The book begins by describing the early attempts to climb the Nordwand, including the harrowing stories of Max Sedlmayer and Karl Mehringer who froze to death in 1935, and Toni Kurz, Andreas Hinterstoisser, Edi Rainer and Willy Angerer who died in 1936.Harrer then tells his first-hand story of the first ascent. Harrer and Fritz Kasparek started their climb on July 21, 1938. A day later, Anderl Heckmair and Ludwig Vörg started their attempt and quickly caught up to them. They combined into one team of four, led by Heckmair. The four men were caught in an avalanche as they climbed the Spider, but all had enough strength to resist being swept off the face."We were all on a single rope. ... One hundred feet above me stood Vorg, safeguarding Heckmair, as he grappled with icy rock, treacherous ice gullies, and snowslides high above us in the mists and driving snow." Heckmair fell as he led the difficult Exit Cracks, but was caught by Vorg, his crampons piercing Vorg's hand in the process. On July 24, 1938 Heckmair, Vörg, Kasparek, and Harrar completed the first ascent of the Eiger Nordwand.Harrer then continues the Eiger story, including the dramatic rescue of Claudio Corti trapped high on the face near the Exit Cracks in 1957. Harrer added a few more chapters in 1964, including the story of Adolf Mayr who fell to his death in 1961 trying for the first solo ascent. After reaching the Second Icefield in 1962 Barry Brewster was struck by a falling rock. His partner Brian Nally tried to care for the dying man, but eventually Brewster fell from the face. Famed British mountaineers Chris Bonington and Don Whillans stopped their attempt to rescue the now disoriented Nally. The stories of the tragic attempts are chilling, the first ascent riveting, the entire book spellbinding. This book is a great history of the Eiger Nordwand. The appendix is better in later editions because Harrer corrects some of the ascents, given more information like finding the bodies of Nothdurft and Mayer in 1961, and includes the list of ascents up to the 1970s. The photos are very good.

I read this book after it was recommended by Joe Simpson in his book. It would have been nice to see some illustrations so I could imagine where various parts were that were discussed although I did end up googling The Eiger I was so curious. The White Spider is a story about some very brave, humble heros who respected and climbed what must be one of the hardest mountains of the lot.It did drag on a bit from the middle onwards, but still worth the read.

Mr. Harrer reflects the discretion and unselfish character that I have found more often in the accounts given by those prior to approximately 1970. As a product of the 1970s, I am humbled and impressed by his detailed accuracy that is without the slightest hint of self exaltation and reflects a fairness to others that is not often seen today. He sticks to the facts, amazing as they are, and tells a story that has no part in the petty squabbles that occur many times in the accounts of today.

I don’t think I stopped reading this until I finished in 2 days! The true, gut wrenching accounts of amazing men trying to conquer the last great problem of the Alps. The North Face of the Eiger.

I like adventure, survival stories.Heinrich Harrier, one of four men, who were the first to climb the famous, extremely difficult and many times lethal north face of the famous Eiger mountain 13041 ft to summit. There are many mountains much higher and much more difficult to climb ( ex. K2, Everest, Annapurna and more) but the very difficult north face had stopped climbers for years. The book is called The White Spider because part of the north face climb is over an extremely difficult and dangerous section called the Spider. Here is snow and ice climbing with falling rocks that kill men, and avalanches that swept men away to their deaths. Also we see the difficult Transverse of the Gods and more.Harrier writes about previous attempts and successes of climbing the north face as well as later attempts. He writes about women climbers, solo attempts and more. Very exciting and well done.My only concern was he tried to write about so many of the attempts trying to show how or why this attempt failed and this attempt succeeded. You can tell he had super respect for them all. Heroes all, even the few survivors that had shaky conflicting stories of what happened, losing their team mates. I think it would of been a slightly better read if he would of concentrated his writing to his 1938 expedition and maybe 3 more expeditions. There were so many attempts and successes, as the north face was such an important difficult climb. This is partial offset as the reader learns more about different teams, the Eiger and how difficult the north face is to climb. So dangerous with falling rock, avalanches and slippery conditions causing the death of many.4 1/3 stars and proudly added to our family library. I liked this book so much I'm buying Heinrich Harrier's NY Times bestseller Seven Years in Tibet and his Return to Tibet. Harrier a good author, just spread himself a little thin covering so many expeditions.

Very good book if you follow the North Face. Very detailed. Truly a delight for mountaineering enthusiasts.

About the Author

Jessie Johnson started her life of adventure by tromping through the woods behind her childhood home in North Carolina. Camping, hiking, backpacking, paddling, climbing, biking, surfing―if you can do it outside, she’s in! With years of practice, she and Matt perfected the ultimate weekend adventure. Matt would pick her up at work every Friday, bikes and burritos ready to go. She’s been a children’s librarian, outdoor educator, Girl Scout troop leader, and sea turtle patrol volunteer. Most recently, Jessie has been lucky enough to turn her weekend adventures into everyday adventures as a Subaru/Leave No Trace traveling trainer and is traveling the western US with Matt, teaching people how to play outside in sustainable ways. She now gets to camp 250 nights a year!Matt Schneider began adventuring at a young age: first while being carried in a backpack, and then while trying to catch up to his parents across trails, down rivers, and up mountains. After earning his Eagle Scout, Matt became a camp counselor, outdoor trip leader, philosophy professor, and challenge course manager (in that order). He has paddled, pedaled, hiked, climbed, surfed, and caved on three continents and in 11 countries and 32 states over the years. When not competing in off-road triathlons or researching his next book, he can be found living on the road with Jessie, teaching outdoor ethics as a Subaru/Leave No Trace traveling trainer.

Croatan National ForestThe Croatan National Forest is an ecosystem smorgasbord. Coast, swamp, salt marsh, longleaf pine savannah, maritime forest: it’s all here. For your coastal paddling fix, make like a sea turtle and paddle to the wild and pristine Bear Island. Or, for something completely different, head into the swamp and paddle through the blackwater of the mysterious White Oak River. Ready to hike? The 21-mile Neusiock Trail offers some of the best and most diverse coastal hiking we’ve done. Spoiler alert: There are (gentle) hills. And before your mountain bike gets all huffy, you can hit the trails on two wheels at Flanners Beach Campground. The nearby town of New Bern has a very healthy road bike scene, so skinny tires are welcome too.Areas included: Bear Island, Croatan National Forest, Hammocks Beach State Park, New Bern, White Oak RiverAdventures: Camping, mountain and road biking, hiking, paddlingLodging: Top Pick:Flanners Beach Campground (US Forest Service) 300 Flanners Beach Road, New Bern; 252-638-5628; www.fs.usda.gov. $12/night, open March–November (call for exact dates), 40 sites, reservations accepted, picnic table, fire ring, lantern pole, flush toilets, hot showers, central water, 24 sites with electric available for an additional $5/night.We’re die-hard tent campers. However, we think that the sites with electric hookups at Flanners Beach Campground (also called Neuse River Campground) are better than the nonelectric tent sites. This isn’t because we have a lot of equipment that requires electricity―although, the next time we camp in August, we’re bringing a fan and a long extension cord―but because the electric sites are bigger, more private, and have ample tree canopy. If shade and solitude are high on your list of campsite essentials, the extra $5 a night is worth it. That said, the nonelectric sites have all the basics, and the ones toward the back of the loop get first-class Neuse River views with a nightly sunset show. Grab site 28 or 29, if you can. If you get creative with the lantern poles and the handful of trees, you can hang a hammock or tarp in these sites. They also stay pretty dry, even after a hard rain, and the paved path that circumnavigates the campground runs right behind them. Just beyond the path, you can scramble down to the broad Neuse River and enjoy a small, quiet stretch of beach. There’s also a bigger beach area a short walk away, down the stairs from the picnic area. There’s no dedicated boat launch at Flanners Beach, but you can carry a small craft down to the river, and there’s a myriad of paddling opportunities within a half-hour drive.

In Distant LandsA Short History of the CrusadesAuthor Lars BrownworthNarrated by Joe BarrettPublication date July 11, 2017Running time 8 hrsCourtesy Tantor MediaI have never read anything directly about the crusades. Whenever I encountered them, they were the backstory or window dressing of another story. For example the legend of Robin Hood centers around Richard the Lionheart being held for ransom when returning from the third crusade. I knew there were several crusades but not exactly how many. I knew some of the main characters like Richard, Eleanor of Aquitaine when she was Queen of France, Saladin and Suleiman but I did not really know how they all fit together. I knew there was seriously messed up stuff involved like the Children’s Crusade and the crusaders sacking Constantinople, their own ally. In Distant Lands A Short History of the Crusades helped fill all those gaps in my knowledge of an incredibly complex subject that continues to have relevance even today.Mr. Brownworth begins the book by explaining which characters go with which crusade. I found that extremely helpful. So many of the names are not familiar, like Alexius I Comnenus, who was the emperor of Byzantium and whose request for help set the first crusade in motion. The book then lays out the logical order of events that created the need for the Byzantine emperor to seek help from the Roman Catholic Pope. He also then shows how events spiraled out of control until there was absolutely no hope of stopping the disaster that followed. The book does a wonderful job of balancing events and people. The significance of the events, what led up to them and what their consequences were are all told in a very readable fashion. At the same time the people involved in the events are discussed in a way that gives them depth and life. Nothing happens in a vacuum and the author does a great job of illustrating the people who created the events.Joe Barrett did an excellent job narrating In Distant Lands. His voice is very pleasant to listen to. He enunciates clearly and the production quality is excellent. He never stumbles on any of the foreign words whether French or Arabic. I would not hesitate to choose another book he narrates. In Distant Lands has kindled an interest for me in this period of history. I have two other books picked out for my next trip into this time period (God’s Wolf by Jeffrey Lee and The Templars by Dan Jones). I will also be looking into more of Mr. Brownworth’s work. I found In Distant Lands to be very accessible while not oversimplifying a complex subject.

I learned more about the eight crusades in Lars Brownworth's popular history of this subject than I have in any academic course I have taken. Outremer and the Levant were thoroughly explained so that the reader can visualize the rather complicated geography of the eastern Mediterranean coast in relation to the Crusader States. I thought the Cast of Characters was a reference tool that was easy for the reader to return to time and again as he read the book with its multitude of central figures from popes and emperors to Prester John and Yolande. Last but not least, is the Epilogue which Brownworth treats with respectful provocation and a timely analysis. A highlight of the book!

Fantastic book, the author is a great storyteller, does not have a single boring chapter, which is amazing for a history book. I read it in two days, very captivating stories with lots of fascinating people and details. I will read all Lars Brownworth books, he rocks!

As a novice on this subject it was easy and entertaining to read and easy to follow the story. Some interesting interpretations at the end iro Christian vs. Muslim perspectives. Well worth the read.

This is a good introduction to the Crusades.

Jam-packed with information few readers would know about the Crusades. It is truly a concise history course on the subject from the perspective of all sides.

Truth is better than fiction. Brownworth makes history come alive in an epic fashion . rather than read stories u can read about the real events but not in the dry boring way its some in schools

Excellent writing style! I love all his books!

From the Back Cover

Pot-Limit Omaha is the next big trend in poker. It is by far the biggest cash game in every casino where it is played. The only thing holding it back from going mainstream is that players have no idea where to start. They don't know how to think about the game in general, and starting hands in particular. In Pot-Limit Omaha literature, everybody knows that AAKK and AAJT double-suited are the best hands, and that a rundown like JT98 double-suited is nice; but NOBODY explains what else is playable, and more importantly why. If players knew where to start, then EVERYBODY would play Pot-Limit Omaha, because it is simply the most exciting and action packed game in poker. It is also the highest stakes poker game in every card room in which the game is spread. POT-LIMIT OMAHA by Jeff Hwang is the most thorough discussion of the game ever published, and the only one to talk about starting hand construction, as opposed to the vague "the best hands to play" line given in every other book. It provides readers with a big-play strategy centered around straight draws and nut flush draws, as well as a basic understanding of post-flop play. The book includes sections on Limit Omaha Hi/Lo and Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo (this is the only book in the market that discusses these games). Jeff Hwang has established a concerted strategy aimed at winning the big pots, while using positional advantage to pick up pots (not necessarily on the flop) when the money is not all in. Hwang has sought to change the way the average Omaha player thinks about starting hands, as well as the game of PLO itself, by concentrating on the Big Play Objectives: the nut straight freeroll, the nut full house freeroll, set-over-set, flush-over-flush, overfull vs. underfull, top-set plus draws, and dominating draws. Includes sample hands, practice situations and hand quizzes.

#112,901 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is a phenomenal book on Omaha. It's easy to understand and explains the reasoning behind its principles very well. I read this book years ago and go back to it frequently, as it's still one of the difinutive books on Omaha I know of. To be clear though, the methods within are appropriate for a very certain kind of play. Full ring cash games are the exclusive domain of the material, you have to be able to sit and play very tight aggresive. If you play short handed or tournaments, you will need to study other sources. But if you are mostly playing lower-mid stakes full cash games irl or online this is solid, fundamental, actionable and difficult to exploit poker.

this is simply one of the best books i have read on any subject. extremely well written.i would give one proviso and that is that you shouldn't use this book for 6-max online. anyway, that game is often 4 or 5 handed and then it's a rakefest with almost no winners (and i'll go as far as to say no statistically significant winners whatsoever until you get way up in stakes).this book is somewhat nitty but exactly what you want for full table plo at bricks and mortar casinos. 6-8 seeing a limped flop. 3 to 5 seeing a raised flop.the plo8 section is really well done too. i see it as a free add-on to the plo section and it seems like it is a nice synthesis of the information out there on plo-8. plo high is quite a bit more straight-forward to bet/raise or not. plo-8 has alot more subtelty i think. and jeff does a great job on this.one area where i think he may go a bit far is his worry about free rolls. it seems like any nut straight you have on a flush draw board has some chance of a free roll. but i wouldn't go overboard on worrying about it myself. free roll is situations like when you have the nut straight but there is a flush draw out there. i guess another reason why there is so much respect for suited aces over suited kings/queens/etc.the above paragraph gets into the basic gist of the book's strategy. you want to be the one with an ace high flush vs. a 10 to King high flush..... the other basic of plo strategy is that you want alot of different ways to make a strong hand. naked aces aren't really that valuablejeff did some later books but they are to certain degree about six max. and i don't think that game is sustainable at all online and doesn't exist anywhere B&M that i know of.one of his later books though has alot of good info on spr. basically there comes a point where you've put some much money in the pot that it's fine to go with your jack high flush and hope for the best. better of course to have a redraw to a full house.... jeff's good spr work has been in cardplayer. not sure if it's behind a subscription wall or not these days.great book.......... maybe someone, even jeff, can clarify as to his content in later plo books.............. ciaffone's book is really good too, but very basic. and lyle's berman's chapters in SS2 is good too

This book took me from clueless novice (and I thought I had a clue) to fully understanding what the objective of the game is and how to achieve that objective. The subtitle says it all: The Big Play Objective. The author does an amazing job at explaining that there is only one goal in PLO... to take your opponents entire stack. Jeff teaches the basics first and just from the first 3 chapters I was already so much wiser about this great game. Every single page has golden knowledge that is indispensable! In my honest opinion, this is the best poker book ever written. No other book has even come close in improving my game overnight. When I finished reading this book, I went from the occasional winner (without a clue to what I was really doing) to a constant winner and knowing why I was winning is the best feeling of all.For any player wishing to get better at PLO play, this book is your gateway to your best play possible.

This book is a must if you want to get a grasp of Omaha. You may not follow every suggestion he makes, but he gives you a very useful framework from which to make good decisions. In my opinion, it is worth its price for the chapter on starting hand selection alone. You could learn all of this the hard way, but this book will accelerate your learning curve and have you playing winning Omaha sooner.

Jeff Hwang, Pot-Limit Omaha Poker: The Big-Play Strategy (Lyle Stuart, 2008)Omaha is a wonderful game. It's second only to Cincinnati as my favorite poker variant (and no one plays Cincinnati anymore, not even in Europe), and I play Omaha and Omaha-split tournaments whenever I can. I've read a few books on the game over the years, but none of them has ever been comprehensive until now. Pot-Limit Omaha Poker: The Big Play Strategy attempts to teach the reader how to minimize the variance (as much as possible, anyway, in a game where edges are often razor-thin at best when the money goes in), play tighter, and show a long-term profit. If you've played Omaha with an eye towards making money at it, but never actually done an in-depth study of the game, it's quite likely you're going to find the codification of a lot of concepts you've always suspected, but never really had the data to back up (e.g., just how much worse is A3xx than A2xx in Omaha-split, and is 2-3xx without an ace ever worth playing?). Hwang actually addresses why a one-gapped rundown is better in certain situations than a rundown. I never thought I'd see that. (To be fair, I'd only recently started wondering about that.) And really, it's hard to resist a book that tell you that the easiest money to be made in the poker world is at the limit Omaha-split table... and then goes on to back that up with thirty pages of how-to. If you're going to play Omaha, you need this book. ****

From the Author

A LANGUAGE OF LOVEA Tantra is a conversation between the Goddess Who Is the Creative Power of the Universe and the God Who Is the Consciousness that Permeates Everywhere. For short, they call each other Devi and Bhairava, or Shakti and Shiva. They are lovers and inseparable partners, and one of their favorite places of dwelling is in the human heart. The text has the feeling of one richly experienced body speaking with love to another body.Their inquiry is about how to enter into the vibrant essence of the world with the dual balance of passion and detachment. The teaching emerges from their love-play, reminding us that from within our own hearts we are educated in the spirit of love. They lived this teaching. The secret pathways in the body and the flow of delicious energies are revealed in words that one friend or lover would speak to another. The text invites us to be at home in the universe by accepting every intense experience, every sensual delight, every ordinary moment, as a gateway to the divine. The conversation begins with Devi asking, "Beloved, tell me, how do I enter more deeply into the reality of the universe?" In reply, Bhairava describes 112 techniques for becoming enlightened through everyday life experience. Each of these techniques is a way of attending to the rhythms, pulsations, and sensuousness of the divine energy that we are made of and that flows through us always. As we engage with these meditation techniques, we are alerted to the presence of the sacred that permeates our bodies. All of these methods involve savoring the incredible intensity underlying the most common experiences. They work by activating the senses, by extending the range of the senses further into the inner and the outer world. The basic dynamics of life--breathing, falling asleep, waking up, walking, loving--are all used as gateways to alignment and enlightenment. Each meditation is a deep dive into aliveness, into the underlying reality of what life is. Balance is there at every step; the unshakable serenity of the depths is used as a foundation so that we can tolerate the electrifying vastness of the universe. We are invited to cross the threshold, to walk by the guardian of the gate, to face our terrors, and make our way into the immense and timeless mystery that is always calling. Many of these meditation techniques are surprisingly informal: Notice a powerful emotion, sensation, or desire, and enter into that awareness with total abandon, so that you go with it right into the root movement of the universe. When making love, put your aware- ness into the flame of passion pulsating through the body and become that flame. Falling asleep, pay attention to the transition from waking consciousness to unconsciousness, and catch a glimpse of what con- sciousness itself is. Or go outside on a moonless night and simply merge with the darkness and vastness of space. The text also describes what we think of as traditional yoga medita- tions--ways of savoring breath, sound, and internal luminosity. The intimacy with the self implied in these teachings means that tantra is not a set of techniques imposed from outside. Rather, the method emerges naturally from one's relationship with the self and with life. Lose yourself in intense experience, and find your Self. In this text, the word yoga is used in its etymological sense, "the act of joining, linking together." Yoga is connecting--connecting all the elements and levels of your being. The tone of the text is playful and exploratory--jump in and feel everything. Lila is Sanskrit for "play," "amusement," and the sense that the universe has been manifested as an act of play by the divine. Through play, find your way. In play, find freedom, revelation, illumination.

This is a very fine book of practices. The dual presentation (the practices in one group, and the Sanskrit keywords in another) gives two viewpoints about each practice. The author also tells you how to pronounce the Sutras, even if you do not know the unusual pronunciation that is used in the Roman-letter transcription of Sanskrit. These Sutras, however, are not a literal translation of the original Vijñanabhairava. They are an interpretation - an inspired and helpful interpretation, but not exactly what the old text says. The author admits that, and explains why he has done it. He has also given a well-commented bibliography that will direct the reader to more exact versions. If you are charmed by this collection, you can expect to be buy another version the offers the original meanings.

Many reviews here will tell you that this is not the original Vijnanabhairava. While this is true enough, you can use this volume as a companion to the original translated by Jaideva Singh. When I compare the original sutra's translation against its counterpart in The Radiance Sutras I find them to be in complete harmony. Each night, I've worked my way through the Vijnanabhairava and the Radiance Sutras one sutra at a time and contemplated the meaning of what I'd read then did the exercise each sutra described. I found each one to be jewel and each demonstrated how the manifested universe has embedded in it, and in each of us, what I can only describe as 'lifehacks for awakening'. Each one of these 112 sutras can lead the practitioner to an awakening and each one is based on some observation of phenomena built into your very own being. Awakening is available within! No other equipment or further purchases required. For instance, one sutra is based on the built-in repetition of a mantra we all say thousands of times every day as we breathe, but never with awareness. Powerful stuff here.Knowing of my interest in nondual philosophies, a friend of mine introduced me to Kashmir Shaivism and first recommended the Vijnanabhairava to me several years ago. I first bought the Jaideva Singh translation and found that on the flyleaf the reader is advised to first get a philosophical grounding by reading the Siva Sutras (translation also available by Jaideva Singh). I took that advice and am glad I did. I would say that understanding the basics of the Siva Sutras should be considered prerequisite to tackling this practice. I was, frankly, stuck in getting an ever deeper understanding of the Siva Sutras - a book I could seriously spend the rest of my life studying all on its own...yes, it's that deep - when I discovered the Radiance Sutras. Its discovery prompted me to break out of my study of the Siva Sutras to attempt the practices of the Vijnanabhairava. The experience - and the Radiance Sutras' contribution to that experience - has been very enriching. So my advice - echoing the flyleaf of the Jaideva Singh's translation of the Vijnanabhairava - is to read the Siva Sutras first, then do the practices here next.

Thank you Dr. Roche for bringing this book to light! After 40 years of discipline as a kriya yogi disciple of P. Yogananda, I must admit that the inclusiveness represented in these sutras is astoundingly refreshing and helpful.I am very aware that these sutras include the lynchpin kriyas hundreds of years before Babaji introduced them to Sri Shyama Charan Lahiri. Sutra 7 gives the equivalent of first kriya, and sutra 155b gives the equivalent of the foundational kriya mantra 'hong sau.'Until I read these I had been 'accusing' my guru P. Yogananda of giving out kriya indiscriminantly in his 1925 Yogoda or Tissue-Will System of Physical Perfection. YOGODA or Tissue-Will System of Physical Perfection: Including 3 Chapters on Concentration and Meditation Techniques by Swami Yogananda (2016-04-19) Perhaps instead he was giving Sutra 7 as a breathing mantra but without attributing it to its source.Phil Goldberg The Life of Yogananda: The Story of the Yogi Who Became the First Modern Guru speaks of Yogananda as "democratizing kriya" and I will leave him to defend that assertion, but perhaps we may now see Yogananda as attempting to bring India's entire spiritual legacy to the West (and not just that of Babaji's kriya).Never-the-less let me emphasize that in finding these sutras to be brilliantly refreshing I also find them soulfully solacing and curative.I also see that in your earlier graduate work you research the issue of the dangers of meditation. Thank you for that. Sri M of Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master: A Yogi's Autobiography and Journey Continues: A Sequel To Apprenticed To A Himalayan Master fame is about the only other Master I know that gives examples of the psychosis that can and fairly predictably will ensue at the highest reaches of meditation prior to nirvikalpa samadhi. In any case I thank you for your excellent work!
