I'm conflicted about this book. It was well written and covered a tough subject very well. But I still feel let down by it. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with it, it just wasn't right.The characters are well written and you can see the growth in most of them throughout the novel. They are realistic and I can see myself coming across people just like them in real life. I didn't really fall in love with Drew, but that's more due to personal reasons than the writing of him. He was a great character to have in the sea of crazy teenage behavior.I think my main problems with this book are that it covers such a long time period and there is never really a major conflict and resolution in the novel. I always think a book should start as close to the end as possible, which is why I can typically forgive the "love at first sight" plots of young adult novels. However, this book covers 3 years of Katie's life, and during those years, yes, things happen, but there isn't one main event. I kept waiting for something to happen that would have me on the edge of my seat and nothing ever did. I wasn't blown away by the plot and it felt a little ho-hum for my tastes.Overall, this was a good book, but it just left something to be desired. It felt more like a story instead of a novel, in that things happened, but at the same time, nothing really happened. There was so much potential, and I feel like it just didn't quite reach the level it could have.

Grade: BChampion swimmer Katie is sent to boarding school after her older brother's latest schizophrenic episode. For the first time she's popular and has a boyfriend, Drew, though she's closest to roommate Mazzie.Katie first person narration seemed authentic and I could read for hours at a time without a break. I like Jessica Warman's writing style. She mixes great dialogue, description and plot and BREATHLESS has great voice.Katie was perfectly imperfect, with a good heart but not always the best judgment. She's kind, most of the time, and honest some of the time. I loved her complicated relationship with her brother as his mental health deteriorates. I adored Mazzie, my favorite character, secretive, sardonic and and loyal. The only character I truly loathed was Drew, a holy roller who thought Katie and Mazzie were going to hell for being agnostic and Buddhist respectively. He was subtly possessive and controlling, but that was never addressed. On the surface he treated Katie quite well. I kept hoping she'd kick him to the curb or he'd fall in love with another holy roller.The entire book alluded to Mazzie's mother dying under either traumatic or mysterious circumstances, and I didn't like the way that was resolved. Aside from that, the book had closure and an epilogue, though they were somewhat weak.An added bonus, there is some crossover of characters between BREATHLESS and Warman's WHERE THE TRUTH LIES, which takes place in another boarding school.Themes: boarding school, mental illness, friendship, dating, partying, swimming, familyA fun read, but I doubt a memorable one.

This was an quite interesting book. A pretty good read. But I did wish there was more to this book somehow. It seemed a bit too simple for me. It's like there's this great topic, but it's always touch and go. This happens, she leaves the same day. it doesn't drag out or get into it much deeper. So much avoidance. A bit too much in my opinion.And where's her happy ending? I mean she sounds happy 10 years later, but I'm quite curious if she's actually the marrying kind of girl or not for sure. I would like to see a sequel to show how she ends up regarding her love life. I can imagine whoever she ends up with would be amazing to be able to turn her head and rock her world.Great book, but could've been better.

This is my favorite of Jessica Warman's books so far, despite the fact that I wasn't crazy about the ambiguous ending. Katie is not an unlikeable narrator; she's flawed, for sure, but the reader empathizes with her family life and her struggles to fit in at a school where she feels like swimming is one of the only things she has in common with her classmates, at least initially. Several reviewers have commented on disliking the smoking, drinking, and sexual content in the book, but in my experience as a high school teacher, it's realistic. Even good kids aren't perfect, and I liked that Katie wasn't painted as being beyond repair despite engaging in those activities. (I did find it a little unrealistic that a chain smoker would be such a phenomenal swimmer, but that's a minor criticism.)I felt like there were some unanswered questions in the book; I wasn't crazy about the ambiguous epilogue and would have liked to know more about how their lives turned out after high school. I also felt like there were unexplained things in Katie's relationship with her roommate, Mazzie, and would have liked to know more about the two of them after high school - the epilogue suggests that they keep in touch, but given their exceptional closeness throughout the book, I would have been interested to see how that friendship was maintained over distance and time. Overall, though, this was a great book and definitely one I'll recommend to students in search of a good read.

Excellent book for any would-be poet and every is poet. Chapter 9, Singing, nearly alone warrants the cost of this book. The author's description of the more complex music possible in poems is something I've believed myself, and practice, but have never in a book for poets, and rarely heard in classrooms.

My interest in Nigeria is work-related and I found myself wanting to know a little more about the country. Well, I mostly wanted to know a little more about Lagos specifically, but there were no good books on just Lagos so I went with them. All in all I'm pleased with the decision.I found this to be an easy read, not too dry and kept my interest. And I did learn a lot more about the history of Nigeria, from a political standpoint. I was mostly interested in the second half of the 20th century onward and felt it covered that nicely.

Campbell's very clearly written book is authoritative and well-documented--hardly surprising, since he was recently our ambassador to this troubled country and in an excellent position to see what was going on. Nigeria, with its oil, mineral resources, and arable land, has the potential to be an African powerhouse comparable to or greater than South Africa. In fact, it verges on being a failed state, shredded by intense tribal loyalties and hatreds, by equally intense religious animosities, by an exploding population, and by corruption at every level. Campbell discusses these in specific detail. Events in Nigeria since this book was written (2011) give little cause for optimism.We lived in Nigeria shortly after independence (1964-65); I was teaching chemistry at the University of Ife and setting up labs. It was a wonderful year. Nigerians and expatriates alike were very high on Nigeria, and expected it to be the showcase for African independence. Sadly, both for Nigeria and for the rest of the world, this was not to be. The country has staggered from one disaster to another, infrastructure has been allowed to go down the drain, military coups and harsh dictatorships have been frequent, violence is rampant, and the word Nigeria has become a synonym throughout the world for scams and corruption. Campbell discusses what needs to be done to get the country back on track. Given the present situation (tribal and religious animosities, mushrooming population, etc.), I do not see how what needs to be done can be done.

Unbelievable book. Highly recommended read for both the curious and the already educated on Nigeria. Great trek through history to the present day.

This means that the words, notes, messages, sayings, actions,etc of ALL their illustrious ancestors are studied carefully and commented upon, just as our Bible is.This means that their rulers have always gone back about 1500-2000 years to study the successes and failures of the past.The first Dynasty collected them into Canon Volumes that were held in the greatest secrecy because they were considered knowledge too dangerous for others to know, so were held in the hands of a special few at any given time.Sawyer who is also the premier translator of Sun Tzu's The Art of War is a Chinese scholar of great depth and serious scholarship. You read this to get information as you read The Art of War, a much shorter book. Gradually Sawyer gives you information, leads your associations into other areas, and at last embeds you in the ruling Chinese mindset. Chinese history is exposed as they were involved in State against State for centuries. Subterfuge,strategies,spying,double agents were their concentration while European knights and kings were warring with unsubtle techniques for winning. Gradually as you read this book you will inject yourself with the Chinese ruling mind set an d begin to read the present political world through Chinese eyes. It is an abrupt awakening let me tell you.As Sun Tzu says, "Victory is excellent.But to win without firing a shot is the very best." This is what China has in mind for the western world.Snowden showed the world US hegemony with its client States. And China watched. China did not offer asylum in Hong Kong because "the time is not yet ripe."The prescription for the right time is approaching when criticism will no longer be tolerated from us without draconian punishment. That will be the final straw and we will fold our cards.China's vision is to become the Hegemon of the World. This is something the US has aspired to be but during the Cold War the Soviets held us at stale-mate. Now it is different.Russia and China just became allies. This is also the way it worked in ancient times. They are watching while we fight ourselves into weakness over a deterritorialized enemy the Muslims while we stupidly fight territorialized wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that we cannot possibly win.And China watches us get weaker and weaker and weaker. They are playing the capitalist game with us, giving us toys while they increase their gold holdings and promote the Yuan to the Currency of the World. All with our cooperation, our eager cooperation I might add. There is more as I am only halfway finished. It leaves you no doubt as to who the victor will be and it will be so subtle we won't even know it until the restrictions on the limits of our greed begin to be curtailed.

This book is divided into 6 sections with a total of 17 chapters. It is well researched, scholarly and authoritative. And while it is not a page turning spy thriller it is not soporific either. It is meant for the serious students in the “intelligence community” especially those dealing with the Chinese sphere of influence. For while the book deals with ancient China the principles taught in this book can easily be extrapolated to the present and into the future. And in fact the principles taught in this book particularly how to subvert and destroy a state are being used today. But any student of ancient China will profit by reading it. I learned many things from it including that then as now that advice is only as good as the person who takes it. That many wise ministers had to deal with foolish kings who didn’t heed their advice or fell for the same traps that other states had fallen for in the past despite China’s devotion to history. Even the gods strive in vain against stupidity.The author also highlights the tension between the ideals of Confucianism and Realpolitik which has historically tended to weaken China and also give a wrong impression to the world about what China is really like.The title of the book is a bit of a misnomer, or perhaps it may be more accurate to say that the author did not keep the content of the book in line with the title. “The Tao of Spycraft” suggested to me that the book would deal with espionage and spying but this was only true for the first three sections covering nine chapters. These are filled with many fascinating examples from Chinese history of how espionage was carried out. But as we progress farther into the book there are fewer and fewer examples of how the subject matter of the chapters is related to espionage. It is fascinating reading nonetheless but an effort could have been made to relate the topics of discussion to actual historical examples. For example chapter 10, which is in the section on “Theories of Evaluating and Intelligence”, verges on the esoteric in its discussion of the Chinese theories of reality. Digesting it would have been easier if the reader had been rewarded by seeing how this played out in reality with some historical examples. The final chapter regarding divination and prognostication was particularly disappointing as it was basically a translation of some texts with little or no commentary what to speak historical examples.One major flaw in the book that could have easily been avoided is the complete absence of any maps of ancient China showing the geographical positions of the various States who are the main protagonists in the book. I had to resort to the internet to find out where Chin, Lu, Wie, etc. are located. This is an easy to fix lacuna and hopefully future editions will include them. Another irritation is the spelling of Chinese names. What exactly is the difference between Chin and Ch’in? Another mildly irritating usage was the use of unusual turns of phrase. One that surfaced quite often was “fullness and vacuity” which I suppose means strengths and weakness of the state or army. Perhaps such turns of phrase are meant to convey a certain Chinese flavor, but I think that could have been done in a less awkward way.All in all it was a good book. I learned a lot and looked forward to reading it for an hour or two or even three every evening.

About the Author

Michael Burgan has written numerous books for children and young adults during his nearly 20 years as a freelance writer. This series is very accessible for reluctant readers, beginning readers, ESOL students, or even "regular" readers in middle school or high school. One thing I like about the series is that they don't patronize the readers or boil it down to "see Spot run, see Paul Revere ride" simplicity.This book provides a thorough overview of the background, the event itself, and the aftermath. They discuss "taxation w/o representation" and the buildup of tensions between the Redcoats and the residents of Boston. Their discussion of the "massacre" itself (or "riot," if you prefer) avoid simplistic descriptions that praise the freedom-loving colonists and blame the brutal Redcoats. They discuss the agitation after the event by Samuel Adams but also discuss John Adams successful efforts to get the Redcoats acquitted. It concludes with a brief account of the war's outbreak at Lexington.Middle school and high school ESOL students often complain that the books they're given to read are "baby stories." It's a challenge to adapt and simplify the language without simplifying the content. The editors of this series do a good job of avoiding that trap.

I am a teacher and my students absolutely love these books! I would give them 5 stars, but they are cheaply made and pages start falling out after only a small amount of use.
