Brief summary and review, no spoilers.This novel takes place in England and the time period is right after the reign of the legendary King Arthur - which is all somewhat deliberately vague. The storyline centers around the travels of 5 main characters.The first two characters we meet - and indeed in many ways the central two characters - are an elderly couple who leave their village in search of their son. Their memories are fading and they are not sure where their son is or even what he looks like anymore. Their reason for leaving their village are hazy as well; ostensibly something to do with their being denied a candle by other villagers.The other characters are a young boy, a brave warrior and a valiant old knight.So much of the storyline is dreamlike and vague and I believe your ultimate enjoyment and satisfaction of this novel is based on the premise that the less you know the better, so I will only say a bit more without causing any spoilers.We know that the characters all unite at some point. We know that they are all on different missions. Their goals are seemingly unclear but will become clear at the end.I loved this book. At the same time I have to say that it was not a quick read for me and there were points up until midway when I thought about giving up on it. Part of this was that I am not usually a fan of books that are somewhat "dreamlike" or surreal and I usually like my stories more straight-forward and grounded. There are lots of points in this book where you feel your own memory is fading; indeed what it might be like to have dementia. That Ishiguro pulls this off so effectively is impressive but daunting for the reader.So for me, this book took a bit of work, but I was so glad by the time I finished that I had read it. The prose, as with any of the other book by this author, is just gorgeous. You really don't want to skip one word and you really shouldn't.I do promise you that it all comes together beautifully by the end, and it was quite an emotional read for me. The storyline is so heartfelt and very mythic in feel and Ishiguro has some poignant and powerful things to say about love and vengeance, morals and ethics and about memory and reflection. Just amazing.Highly recommended.

I have never read anything quite like this ever before..The Buried Giant is part fable, part road-story, part exploration of character: when the point of the journey and the backstory becomes clear, it was as if a light came on. I can think of some people who'd find this writing infuriating: the whole way in which it's handled makes it hard to work out whether what's being described is the world as it is or the world as it's being seen by the characters. Once I'd decided simply to allow the author's approach to work itself out, I loved it: but, as I say, it's a really strange book, a really strange way of writing. And: please note my star rating: once I'd finished it, I thought it brilliant!( I went on to read some of the author's other works: they're quite different, both from this and really, from each other: but just as skilfully written! I now have a new author to follow)

Is it better to remember—or to forget? Is memory a treasure that gives our lives meaning and shapes our identities--or a curse that keeps us from feeling love and acceptance in the present?The Buried Giant is an ideal example of what rich, meaningful, challenging literary fantasy can do.It's reminiscent of Ishiguro's own work (Never Let Me Go similarly exemplifies the potential of literary science fiction) but also of the philosophical, allegorical, character-driven fantasy of Mervyn Peake, Gene Wolfe, Ursula Le Guin, and Margo Lanagan (whose amazing Tender Morsels is also a must-read), among others. Imagine Wolfe's Wizard Knight series with its Arthurian setting and unpredictability but with elderly protagonists, a smaller cast, and a focus on memory (and how it can provide meaning and also create pain--for individuals and nations) and you'll have a good picture of what to expect from The Buried Giant.Literal events are comprehensible with some effort (despite shifting points of view and breaks in chronology as characters start stories and only later explain the events leading up to them), but the novel leaves open profound questions about love, war, violence, and memory. It's also consistently beautiful and engaging at the sentence level--unlike in much generic fantasy (which sometimes presents elaborate worlds and plots but falls flat in emotion, dialogue, and characterization), characters each speak and act in completely distinct ways, and there is wit and meaningful, often moving emotions in the smallest incidents. The novel is more about its characters and themes than its plot, and it isn't dependent on lots of things happening, but by the end, the lives of the characters, and the shape of their world, are indeed fundamentally changed.Unfortunately, books like this often disappoint the two groups of readers who give them a chance: readers of realistic literary fiction, who are turned off that it's fantasy, which they foolishly see as subliterary (even though most of the history of literature before the development of realism actually consists of what we'd now consider fantasy, and the kind of primarily commercial fantasy thought to define the genre is merely an invention of the last few decades), and readers of generic/commercial fantasy, whose conventional expectations (a standard quest, action, completely clear storytelling, an enormous amount of world-building, etc.) will be frustrated by the novel's literary style and focus on character and theme.But for those who can appreciate literary fantasy (my own favorite form of literature), it will be magical--the kind of book to read and reread and give to others in the hopes they will feel the same.

Every title is popular with our 2nd and 3rd graders. They run from 2nd - 5th grade Accelerated Reader levels. The books have plenty of good information for biography reports for 2nd graders. The information is accurate and put together in an interesting way. There are illustrations running through each book to enhance the story. (However, Sally Ride has less interesting illustrations than most books in this series. The quality of the paperback is good. These are a "go to" for our students. I have many of them because of this in our school library.

This book was great! My 5th grade daughter had to write a research report using three sources so we needed something informative, simple yet quick to read so she would have plenty of time to focus on the actual writing of the paper. This book foot the bill. And it had lots of photographs of Ride. It was written on probably a third grade reading level and concentrated on Ride’s professional life and accomplishments not her personal life.

I purchased this book as a gift for my 9-yr-old neighbor and additional copies for my adult ESL students. The adults really appreciated it, both for its readability for people learning English and for its inspirational subject matter, ie, Sonia Sotomayor.

The family is also 'Noble' and have other writers in the family. Thomas Pakenham, who wrote 'The Scramble for Africa' and another brother who is also a writer and best selling author, and wrote The Mountains of Rasselas' of Africa, in Ethiopia. and his sister Valerie Pakenham. The Wellesly and the Pakenham families were closely connected. One can read about Wellington's start as a Member of Parliament, then as a young officer sent to the famous Riding Academy in France, and them a young officer sent to India at the head of a regiment. and see him grow into an excelent field officer.and thenthe wars in India, which really brought him to the fore,as onen of the youngest generals in the Army. Read it yourself, you will not be able to put it down for a nights sleep.

I wanted a solid biography of the Iron Duke. This book was exactly that. My only quibble was the author's tendency to insert French phrases from time to time but not provide an English translation. Still for those wanting to have some real understanding of Sir Arthur, this book, written by a relative of his, is the one to read.

The first of two volumes, this covers Wellington's live through Waterloo, and is the best (readable, clear, detailed) one-volume account of the Penninsular campaign and Waterloo I have read.

Sadly no longer in print, this is arguably the best biography of the militay career of Wellington ever written. It folows the development of Arthur Wellesley from an awkward and uncomfortable, untrained young officer through his growth and development in India and the Peninsula War, to his final conquest of Napoleon at Waterloo. The battles are well researched and well presented, providing a fascinating review of warfare of that era.The book however, is not merely an account of Wellington's military success, but examines the personal life as well and with a far greater insight into his personality than most other biographies, often contradicting the usual portrayal of the man as a cold and unemotional leader.If you can get hold of a copy ot this book, read it. You will not be disappointed.

Interesting and well written story of the Tappan Zee saga. The author paints a realistic picture of moving a mega project forward in the face of many conflicting interests. The question of creating a project that serves the public good despite opposition and compromising on the original project goals to get it built is raised but not answered. It is a inside look at the modern world of public works project development. It is recommended to anyone who is interested in public policy and public works.

Insightful analysis, reads like a mystery, with villains and hereos and red herrings. A good read for anyone who wants insight into how decisions are made about how our tax dollars are spent

Well-written and compelling account of the events leading up to the actual construction.

Politics Across the Hudson is an essential case study of why we can't seem to build infrastructure in the United States anymore. In following the story of the Tappan Zee bridge, now being replaced by fiat, after a decades-long planning process that failed to achieve minimal consensus on something better, Plotch turns a story of extraordinary complexity into a clear and richly-sourced account of planning and environmental politics in our time. The book is valuable as a clear exposition of how the arcane planning and environmental process actually happens: at the same time, it is a human tale of ego and deceit, as strong-willed individuals battle on behalf of the conflicting interests of their agencies and their own personal agendas. Plotch is clearly a talented interviewer, drawing forth the emotional as well as the public character of the key players. He is equally adept at drawing out the essential meaning of the best academic thinking, and concludes with some compelling and cautionary thoughts on what went wrong, and what it means for the future.

Philip Mark Plotch has written a magnificent treatise on the political intricacies surrounding a mega project. Because of his interest and desire for transit in the 287 corridor, Gov. Pataki married the Thruway, who needed a new bridge in the short term to stop the hemmoraging of rehabilitation and repair costs, with Metro North, who wanted a one seat ride on heavy rail from Midtown Manhattan to Stewart Airport anytime in the next 30 years. Three Governors later, Gov. Andrew Cuomo pulled the transit component out of the project (rightfully or not) and got the project moving to construction. This should be required reading for all public planners and engineers.

Excellent historical account of the decades-long study and re-study of different ways to improve transportation in the Tappan Zee/Cross Westchester Expressway corridor that led to the final decision to replace a 60-year-old, 3-mile-long bridge carrying the New York State Thruway across the Hudson River between Rockland and Westchester counties with two new spans at a cost of billions of dollars. Explore the politics behind the required technical work from the governor's office in Albany to county executives in the lower Hudson Valley. Understand how personality traits of some key players influenced decisions. Learn about complicated relationships among different federal and state government agencies, advocacy groups, the public, and elected officials. You may be surprised, but certainly you will come away with a better understanding of what it takes to undertake a complex public works project.

I was so excited when I received this book in the mail! Christine makes homecooking easy with her easy-to-follow recipes--the beauty of these recipes is that each one comes with a chart that allows you to choose different types of bases, proteins, and seasonings to come up with your own take on things. It creates for a lot of flexibility and because you can always experiment with new combinations of ingredients, you'll never get bored of the same dish or recipe. And even though I'm not vegan, I've found the recipes that I've cooked to be delicious, flavorful, and satisfying. In short, it's a great cookbook filled with beautiful photos and tasty recipes that are approachable for people of all skill levels. I'd highly recommend it!

I liked this book. I like Bryan's writing style, although I do think in this book it has a bit more of an "edge" than in some of his previous books. However, he always writes in a style that is easy to remember. I found "two steps closer" a refreshing way to remember to fill the frame, for instance, and who would have thought of "crying babies" for background distractions?I have always thought of myself as a "fill the frame" photographer - sometimes too much filling the frame to the detriment of showing the environment. However reading this book that I had gotten lazy and was NOT filling the frame so much anymore - a good mental kick in the butt. I had my wife look at some of my pictures - old and new - and she really gravitated to the ones that "filled the frame." I shall also watch out for "crying babies" in the backgroun when setting up a shot.The last thing I immediately recognized was that I had gotten away from what i used to call "zone focusing." I used to use it all the time to set an area of acceptable focus. I have gotten away from that with newer lenses that only have a distance scale and not a DOF scale as the old manual ones had. However, Bryan reminds that using the distance scale and a few easy to remember distances you can basically set up your lens so you don't have to focus - and thereby work much faster.There is much more of value in this book, and it is a pleasure to read. If you are new to photography, there is a wealth of information. If you've been around the block a few times, there are good reminders. I've been at it since 1959 and, while I' now only shoot for pleasure, I still found some excellent reminders, ideas, and energy in this book. It is highly recommended.

Many years ago Kodak published a book "How to make good pictures" which implied that enjoyable photos just don't happen, they are created. In this small book Bryan Peterson will show you how he does it, with some tricks of the trade. (If you want even more tricks read Scott Kelby's "The Digital Photography Book series) Peterson goes through the usual suspects; frame your subjects, rule of thirds, backgrounds, focus (depth of field), arranging items within the picture and many others. Because the publisher printed the example photos on excellent paper, you can really see what Peterson is talking about and the sometimes subtle differences between pictures. Even though this book can be read by itself, I think the reader would get even more out of it by first reading the author's classic book "Understanding Exposure" which everyone seems to quote. In Understanding Exposure" he describes better how f stops effect depth of field and emphasis and the differences betweeen Depth of Field in DSLRs and compact cameras. In this book he does list the camera, lens and f stop used for each photo but, to the best of my knowledge he never really explains how to get the same effect with the better compact cameras. "Understanding Exposure" will explain this, especially the 3rd edition.I think that Peterson lifted some of the photos from his other books and on page 251 he points out that our cameras now have the advantage of automatic winders! Really. Peterson's photo examples are usually taken with a full frame DSLR Nikon camera or a professional DSLR camera with a crop factor of 1.5. Even his limited use of the Leica D-Lux (rebadged Panasonic LX-3/5) can do much better that the film rewinders. I'm sure this just slipped by.By reading this book, you can at least get some small idea of the thoughts and creativity of a really great photographer who also enjoys teaching.

I've gotten more out of Bryan's books than any other source and here he has another great one. While it may seem this is a repeat of his Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera this book takes those ideas a step further into composition. Not only is this book full of Bryan's great colorful photos the layout is well designed, colorful, easy to follow and understand. And that's the Kindle version! If you are like me, constantly learning, this is another great one to step up your photography!

Composition is one of those fuzzy sciences; one usually might have an intuitive sense of what makes a good composition, but there's no hard, fast science to it (notwithstanding the golden rule). Peterson, however, equips the reader with a good sense of what visual tools and techniques are available for a photographer (or artist of any kind, really) to create effective compositions. He explains things so clearly and simply, and uses a variety of different examples, so anyone can walk away feeling better equipped to make photographs or art of any kind. This is a really good follow-up to his "Understanding Exposure," which I reread frequently and expect to do the same with this book. (Shooting with a Canon EOS Rebel T3, with kit lens and 55-250mm telephoto zoom, and have already applied a ton of what I've learned in both Peterson's books so far.)

Excellent ideas about how to approach photography with a "view in mind", as it were, before even setting up the camera. Bryan takes a painterly approach which is excellent because composition (structure of the content) trumps everything else in creating photos with great impact. If you feel you're creatively stymied when approaching a picture-taking opportunity or that your photos don't have the emotional power you're looking for, Peterson has some great thoughts here that will probably help greatly if conscientiously and carefully applied. I love Peterson's bold, arresting style and, while some may nitpick that it sometimes ventures too close to commercialism, I think his insights parallel those of Freeman Paterson, hardly commercial in his approach. Great read that makes you want to pick up a camera possibly set aside in frustration and have a whack at creating great pictures – again!

The hikes are fun and mostly easy. The venues are spectacular and accessible, the recommended lodging is usually available and first rate. Even if you can't do the hikes, if you are familiar with coast or have a favorite place the read is very nice.

Quite detailed; will need to check for up to date information. This book provides a good foundation for planning a trip such as this! I'm not looking to do the entire trip, so this will give me the info I need to modify for the southern portion, and figure out amount of days it will take.

Bought the book and did the hike from Newport to San Clemente. Had a ton of fun!

Perfect for planning Inn to Inn! Love the detail of the book, history, etc. Am looking forward to some fun over-nighters in our SoCal beach areas!

Walked Huntington beach to San Clements in four days. Great weather and beaches. Pch was no fun but the rest of the time made up for it.
