I thought, 'Oh boy, a book on theodicy coming from Moody, which is probably by a bunch of conservative theologians who are going to spout off their refashioned old-timer, Calvinistic readings of scripture,' but boy was I naïve, and flat out wrong. I found Peterman and Schmutzer’s book fresh, inspiring, challenging, and deeply biblical. They did their homework and are very well-read on the different theological and philosophical views on the topic, and incorporate other’s views throughout. Obviously, questions will still remain regarding the intricate dance between God, suffering, and evil, but I firmly believe many questions will be answered with compassion and wisdom. An incredible resource and treatment of a decisive issue in the church and in the world.One of many profound insights to share a taste:-"The dramatic movement of lament is both spiritually pedagogical and socially transforming. As John D. Witvliet correctly observes, 'When practiced as an act of faith, lament can be a powerfully healing experience.' Lament captures a pain that informs but does not define the meaning of life. Paradoxically, praise needs pain. Praise that makes sense echoes with the remembrance of suffering reversed. The current social trend views everyone as a victim. This capitalizes on the first part of lament, but without the crowning praise. Patrick Miller warns, 'Both the lowly and the powerful will be tempted to conclude that the status is quo, that possibilities unseen are inauthentic and unlikely, that the world's power to define reality is ultimate and unchallenged.' These illusions in the church contribute to the silencing and disillusionment of its sheep, whose cries need to be given a voice, rather than their shepherding. If the embodied and emotional suffering of the Lord Jesus and his followers is clearly articulated in the Scriptures, should the church not also be a safe place where lament is embrace and difficult questions are welcomed and honored? Between Pain & Grace is a step towards the breakdown of facades that inhibit true worship: facades of power, happiness, sincerity… and a call for believers to reclaim the sacred language of suffering. From the perspective of a Bible college student and a pupil of Dr. Schmutzer and Dr. Peterman, I found the reflections in this book deeply empowering, refreshing, and liberating. I highly recommend this book.

This book is has so much good and practical insight into pain and suffering, with a slightly different focus from Moody Bible Institute professors. (I used it as one of my references on the subject for a theology class at another university.)

This is a highly technical yet engaging and thought-provoking book. It is not the easiest to read if you have no biblical training, yet it is sure to radically challenge preconceptions and traditional models for evaluating suffering. I would recommend to anyone who wants further study on the topic.

Shunned grief is spiritual hypocrisy.” p. 105“Clearly, God values words and tears far more than we do.” p. 113“The sovereignty of God is not seen in what he prevents but in his majestic ability to take the broken pieces of our lives and make something beautiful with them.” p. 201“Typically we find that God gives enough gladness to make life bearable or even enjoyable, and enough pain, sorrow, and trial to remind us that we are just passing through. The new earth will be our real home; this cursed planet, even with its immense beauty, will pass.” p. 277“Truly, the Christian life means to exist between two worlds: the old world of sin, alienation, and death and the new world of righteousness, holiness, and life.” p. 281“The cross of Christ does not culminate redemptive history. Rather, it enables the renewal of the Creator’s world, one called “very good.” p. 300The beginning of pain and grace is written in a technical and academic context, but halfway through the book the information shifts to a pastoral context. In the first chapter the authors identify the difference between pain (objective, external, and typically social as opposed to personal and mental) and suffering (subjective, internal, and typically mental and emotional as opposed to physical or social). p. 14 The authors spend the first few chapters defining important concepts found within a biblical theodicy. They coin a new term, or at least a term that I am unfamiliar with, relational ecosystem. Schmutzer defines relational ecosystem, “Like the roots of a massive tree, we are forced to to recognize sin’s amazing ability to penetrate deep into the crevices of human life, especially the relational tissues of our lives. Suffering is intrinsically woven into the fabric of our relationships… So the salvation that God provides in Christ has more to do with helping and restoration than mere rescue and deliverance.” p. 37-38Between Pain and Grace includes some complex concepts, but there are also some very important practical helps for every believer. Whenever I began to read a book on suffering I always wonder where the author will take me. I was not disappointed with the amount of research that was necessary to write this book, nor was I disappointed with the massive amount of Scripture that was included. The authors are very well read and have put forth great effort. However, the book is not comprehensive. Despite the lack of some important information (hell, war in the OT), I was pleased to see that the authors included topics such as the suffering of Jesus, the suffering of God (divine passibility), community suffering, sexual abuse, and mental illness. The previously mentioned topics are very important discussions for our local churches and very few spiritual leaders are discussing them. Within the book there is also a chapter discussing family (toxic families), the patriarch Joseph is the center-point of the chapter.Between Pain and Grace is an excellent read for anyone interested in suffering or theodicy, but like most other books on the topic I was left wanting. It seems that each writer of theodicy focuses on several specifics, and since that is true, there is always something missing. I commend any writer, theologian, or pastor who tackles the difficult and complex topic of pain and suffering. I cannot get enough of Marissa Meyer's writing! Fairest may look like a fullsized book, but it's more like a hardback novella, being only 220 pages. The chapters are not numbered, but just breaks in the text. Cinder, the first book in the series, is 390 pages. And with each subsequent book, the length has increased.This was an originally unplanned book and although it is very enjoyable, it just adds some background to the main series. Fairest follows Levana's whole story from when her parents first passed until she rules over the moon as Queen. Seeing a villain's story is always interesting.I liked seeing how much of the Queen Levana in Cinder came from her environment and how much was just her. There's definitely a combination. I was prepared for a contrived sympathy-inducing story, but Levana's background matched her character very well.There are many references to the many characters of The Lunar Chronicles. It is cool to see them younger and to learn more about their origins. This book got me really hyped for Winter, which won't be out until November.The evolution of Levana's glamour was probably my favorite part of this book.I give this book a 4.5/5, only because I wanted more. The story seemed so short compared to the other books in the series. I didn't feel as close to Levana as I felt to each of the protagonists of the other books after reading them. I highly recommend this to fans of The Lunar Chronicles series, especially for those waiting for Winter so anxiously like I am.

I loved the first three books of the Lunar Chronicles, so it was a no-brainer when I decided to purchase this one. It didn’t take long to realize this book is nothing like the others, and seems more to be a cash grab than anything else. I’m blaming the publishers, because that seems like the most likely explanation of why this exists as a standalone book. I kind of wish I had just bought Winter, the real fourth book of the series, but it’s not available as a paperback yet.This book is a prequel to the first three books, and is told from the point of view of the main antagonist of the series, Levana. Fairest is much, much shorter than the rest of the series, at 222 pages (and those pages had larger font and fewer lines than in the other three books) compared to around 400+ for the rest of the series.I went in hoping for another well structured novel set in the Lunar Chronicles universe with well written characters and a moving plot. I know Levana is the bad guy, but a novel from her point of view should at least give me the motivation for why she is such a horrible, evil queen and wants nothing more than to kill Cinder. Unlike the characters in books 1, 2, and 3, Levana and her sister Channary are pretty much evil from the beginning, and I guess I have strong hatred for flat, one-dimensional characters because this is what annoyed me the most about this book. There is never any explanation for why Channary is such a wretched person, but towards the end of the book you find out something happens to Levana at the age of six to make her the way she is. I kind of wish the author had Levana start out as a good, kind person and slowly turn evil as the book progresses so we can see some character progression and evolution into the evil person we know her to be. I just needed something so we could have a little sympathy for Levana. In comparison, the Hound in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire goes through something very, very similar to Levana’s childhood trauma, and ends up being a troubled but ultimately very sympathetic, well developed character, and I feel like I know him so much better than I know Levana, even though he is just minor part of ASOIAF while this whole book is about Levana. Just being “greedy for power” isn’t cutting it for me for motivation to kill a three year old. The rest of the book just seemed to be an excuse to name drop characters from the first three books which caused some major eye rolling from this reader. Overall, I was just disappointed by this book.

Fairest - Levana’s Story by Marissa Meyer is a prequel to her fairytale reimagining series The Lunar Chronicles. It provides the backstory to series antagonist Queen Levana Blackburn of Luna. If you are new to The Lunar Chronicles, PLEASE don’t start with this book - go read Cinder, Scarlet and Cress and then come back to it. It will be more engaging in that way.This book is a very focussed character study of Queen Levana and how she turned from a naive, self absorbed young girl into the tyrant our heroines are trying to depose. There is little in the way of worldbuilding or major plot development. It remains mostly confined to the Lunar Royal Palace.What I likedCharacter development. This is the focus of the book and is excellently done. We follow Levana’s progression from a self absorbed, naive young girl to the vicious despot of the later books. I appreciated how each step and decision she took along that path was small and logical at the time but each developed her character as it turned out to be. I found her an interesting character, and at many points she gained my sympathy for what she went through.Character cameos. Many of the characters from the later books made cameo appearances as their younger selves. Even if they weren’t specifically named as such it was great fun to spot Cinder, Cress, Kai and other characters.Audiobook narration. Once again narration is provided by Rebecca Soler who did the narration for the other books in the series. She does a brilliant job of capturing the characters’ voices and I hope she continues for Winter, the final book in the series.What I didn’t likeVery expensive for such a short book. This book is really a novella - barely 272 pages or 6 hours and 36 minutes of audiobook - and yet is was priced comparatively expensively. I paid the price but a bit more resentfully than for other books.No chapter breaks. The book is written in one long narrative unbroken into chapters. Now, I am a working woman and I don’t have the luxury of settling down to long chunks of several hours’ reading. For me, the chapter breaks are valuable to give me a good place to stop.Not Whispersync for Voice compatible. In other words, the ebook and the audiobook didn’t sync. Combined with the lack of chapter breaks, it made switching between ebook and audiobook a very frustrating experience. If you’re only enjoying the book in one medium this won’t be an issue for you, but I did contribute to my lack of enjoyment.Less engaging protagonist. Yes, Levana is a fascinating character and yes, I enjoyed learning about her backstory. However, it cannot be said that she is immediately likeable or engaging in the way that Cinder, Scarlet and Cress are.Less humour. One of the fun parts of The Lunar Chronicles is the banter that is exchanged between our main characters. This was missing from Fairest - Levana’s Story. Thinking back, it’s because in this book we spend very little time with characters who actually like and respect each other. This book contains the first few chapters of Winter, which I listened to, including a scene on the Rampion and I immediately felt “yes, THIS is the Lunar Chronicles I know and love!"To summarise, while I enjoyed Fairest - Levana’s Story, for me it wasn’t a must-read part of The Lunar Chronicles. Certainly, it shouldn’t be the first book you read in the series. It does provide an interesting expansion to the series though.I gave Fairest - Levana’s Story 3.5 stars out of five.

I can’t even describe how just utterly cool this book is! Even if you aren’t into the amazing person or the story or space....what Scott Kelly has captured here will make you well up with pride and tears at this wonderous Planet Earth. His artistic eye gives something to the images that make them feel alive and the blend of personal insight, science in action, and comraderie you can see so rawly documented make this one of my favorite “coffee table” books I’ve ever owned. I purchased his other book Endurance just after browsing this as I am curious what amazing human is such an ambitious cosmonaut and simultaneously a passionate artist.

Library book. No purchase. Beautiful photos from space station taken by American Scott Kelly. Photos inside the station, photos from outside the station, and photos taken of different places on the earth's surface from inside the station. The ones that most interested me were the shots taken of major world cities. The amount of man made light was impressive, yet also scary. Light pollution is one form of pollution that we many times do not address adequately. The colors of many other, less inhabited places on the earth's surfaces were also amazing. For those who love photograpy, georgraphy and space travel. Fun book. Easy look (read). Out of this world?

I didn’t love this book but it is sure to please others. It is a beautifully printed and bound book. I wanted it as gift and thought it would be full of spectacular space shots. It is mostly close ups of those shots. I wanted planet shots like Saturn, not landscapes.

Scott Kelly’s photographic work and effort to pull it all together into a book is a great accomplishment. It leaves me wishing I could have been aboard the ISS taking the pictures myself. Excellent work!

As a former NASA employee I am a space junkie. To see the earth from above makes you see us all as one people.

The photos are engaging. Although the full resolution originals are no doubt incredible, I would rate the print quality of the photos in this book as good to very good. I started to give only 4 stars but reconsidered and gave 5 stars after considering the cost of this book. If they had gone through the expense associated with maximizing the quality of the prints, I would never have acquired the book. That would have been my loss because it’s truly been a pleasure sharing some of Scott Kelly’s remarkable visual perspectives while he was aboard the ISS.

There are a lot of photo books through astronauts attempt to convey what our world looks like from their lofty perspective, and this one is among the best. It is true art!

Wow the Pic's are out of this world. Our little world is so gorgeous. I love this book. My sister loves it too.

I'm conflicted about this book. It was well written and covered a tough subject very well. But I still feel let down by it. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with it, it just wasn't right.The characters are well written and you can see the growth in most of them throughout the novel. They are realistic and I can see myself coming across people just like them in real life. I didn't really fall in love with Drew, but that's more due to personal reasons than the writing of him. He was a great character to have in the sea of crazy teenage behavior.I think my main problems with this book are that it covers such a long time period and there is never really a major conflict and resolution in the novel. I always think a book should start as close to the end as possible, which is why I can typically forgive the "love at first sight" plots of young adult novels. However, this book covers 3 years of Katie's life, and during those years, yes, things happen, but there isn't one main event. I kept waiting for something to happen that would have me on the edge of my seat and nothing ever did. I wasn't blown away by the plot and it felt a little ho-hum for my tastes.Overall, this was a good book, but it just left something to be desired. It felt more like a story instead of a novel, in that things happened, but at the same time, nothing really happened. There was so much potential, and I feel like it just didn't quite reach the level it could have.

Grade: BChampion swimmer Katie is sent to boarding school after her older brother's latest schizophrenic episode. For the first time she's popular and has a boyfriend, Drew, though she's closest to roommate Mazzie.Katie first person narration seemed authentic and I could read for hours at a time without a break. I like Jessica Warman's writing style. She mixes great dialogue, description and plot and BREATHLESS has great voice.Katie was perfectly imperfect, with a good heart but not always the best judgment. She's kind, most of the time, and honest some of the time. I loved her complicated relationship with her brother as his mental health deteriorates. I adored Mazzie, my favorite character, secretive, sardonic and and loyal. The only character I truly loathed was Drew, a holy roller who thought Katie and Mazzie were going to hell for being agnostic and Buddhist respectively. He was subtly possessive and controlling, but that was never addressed. On the surface he treated Katie quite well. I kept hoping she'd kick him to the curb or he'd fall in love with another holy roller.The entire book alluded to Mazzie's mother dying under either traumatic or mysterious circumstances, and I didn't like the way that was resolved. Aside from that, the book had closure and an epilogue, though they were somewhat weak.An added bonus, there is some crossover of characters between BREATHLESS and Warman's WHERE THE TRUTH LIES, which takes place in another boarding school.Themes: boarding school, mental illness, friendship, dating, partying, swimming, familyA fun read, but I doubt a memorable one.

This was an quite interesting book. A pretty good read. But I did wish there was more to this book somehow. It seemed a bit too simple for me. It's like there's this great topic, but it's always touch and go. This happens, she leaves the same day. it doesn't drag out or get into it much deeper. So much avoidance. A bit too much in my opinion.And where's her happy ending? I mean she sounds happy 10 years later, but I'm quite curious if she's actually the marrying kind of girl or not for sure. I would like to see a sequel to show how she ends up regarding her love life. I can imagine whoever she ends up with would be amazing to be able to turn her head and rock her world.Great book, but could've been better.

This is my favorite of Jessica Warman's books so far, despite the fact that I wasn't crazy about the ambiguous ending. Katie is not an unlikeable narrator; she's flawed, for sure, but the reader empathizes with her family life and her struggles to fit in at a school where she feels like swimming is one of the only things she has in common with her classmates, at least initially. Several reviewers have commented on disliking the smoking, drinking, and sexual content in the book, but in my experience as a high school teacher, it's realistic. Even good kids aren't perfect, and I liked that Katie wasn't painted as being beyond repair despite engaging in those activities. (I did find it a little unrealistic that a chain smoker would be such a phenomenal swimmer, but that's a minor criticism.)I felt like there were some unanswered questions in the book; I wasn't crazy about the ambiguous epilogue and would have liked to know more about how their lives turned out after high school. I also felt like there were unexplained things in Katie's relationship with her roommate, Mazzie, and would have liked to know more about the two of them after high school - the epilogue suggests that they keep in touch, but given their exceptional closeness throughout the book, I would have been interested to see how that friendship was maintained over distance and time. Overall, though, this was a great book and definitely one I'll recommend to students in search of a good read.

An easy read, it is primarily set in a WV boarding school in the early-mid 90s where the protagonist, Katie, has been sent by her parents in the hopes that she can use her swimming talent make something of her future, free from the influence of her schizophrenic brother.Things don't always work out exactly as planned, but Katie's travails make her a stronger person.This book is not for all audiences--it has frequent and blatant use of marijuana and alcohol and (mostly off-screen) sexual activity.

Great book... lacks ending... nonetheless I'd read it again. Characters are easy to fall in love with. Would have loo liked to see her and Madeline get together in the end

All in all I'm pleased with the decision.I found this to be an easy read, not too dry and kept my interest. And I did learn a lot more about the history of Nigeria, from a political standpoint. I was mostly interested in the second half of the 20th century onward and felt it covered that nicely.

Campbell's very clearly written book is authoritative and well-documented--hardly surprising, since he was recently our ambassador to this troubled country and in an excellent position to see what was going on. Nigeria, with its oil, mineral resources, and arable land, has the potential to be an African powerhouse comparable to or greater than South Africa. In fact, it verges on being a failed state, shredded by intense tribal loyalties and hatreds, by equally intense religious animosities, by an exploding population, and by corruption at every level. Campbell discusses these in specific detail. Events in Nigeria since this book was written (2011) give little cause for optimism.We lived in Nigeria shortly after independence (1964-65); I was teaching chemistry at the University of Ife and setting up labs. It was a wonderful year. Nigerians and expatriates alike were very high on Nigeria, and expected it to be the showcase for African independence. Sadly, both for Nigeria and for the rest of the world, this was not to be. The country has staggered from one disaster to another, infrastructure has been allowed to go down the drain, military coups and harsh dictatorships have been frequent, violence is rampant, and the word Nigeria has become a synonym throughout the world for scams and corruption. Campbell discusses what needs to be done to get the country back on track. Given the present situation (tribal and religious animosities, mushrooming population, etc.), I do not see how what needs to be done can be done.

Unbelievable book. Highly recommended read for both the curious and the already educated on Nigeria. Great trek through history to the present day.

Great book has many of the cruel truths of dealing in this country, its economy and people.

Good, broad overview of recent history for a general audience. Raises more questions than it answers, a function of Nigeria study of any kind.

Great read for anyone interested in understanding the complex history and politics of West Africa's largest state.

If you want to learn more about Nigeria, then you need to read this book. If you want to know what's wrong with Nigeria, you need to read this book. If you want to know what needs to happen for Nigeria to change, then you'll definitely need to read this book. Trust me, You'll be glad you purchased it...I know what I'm talking about. I hope the Author writes another book, next time detailing more specific solutions on how to solve Nigeria's problems. It's easy to point out problems but what Nigerians need are solutions.
